Tbh, the whole "German cars are unreliable/expensive to fix" thing is outdated even in the US now. The Germans didn't get better, I'm not arguing that, but American cars have gotten a hell of a lot worse. At this point the difference in cost to maintain is largely down to parts availability, parts made and shipped in vast quantity where you live are going to be cheaper. If he lives in Europe, it's probably a lot cheaper to drive that than, say, any non-truck Chrysler product.
