I work in single cam/scripted television so I only know the oscars as it's the one I will bother to go do, but generally speaking it's one production company per broadcast, as the red carpet is a seperate broadcast with different ADs/Editing it's handled by a different production company. House of Paine has been doing the Oscars (they also do the NFL draft and shit) and I have no idea who does the carpet. I'd imagine this is the same for the grammys.

TV shows will just have on production company for the actual filming, in post you can tack on dozens of post-production houses for all sorts of rando shit, there was an entire company that specialized in doing the displayscreens for the SHIELD flying carrier's bridge stations. Like that's it, that's all they did.

I've done some comedies. Blame pointing is basically a whole politics thing in and of itself, in that scenario you'd probably blame the on-set costumer, but sometimes you just have a production assistant fall on their sword.

I work on a lot of the lots, Universal, Warner Brothers, etc there's really no "off limits" areas. The stage for another show, but it's not like there's security on the doors on the lots and you can wander through other peoples sets if you feel like it. Getting caught means being blacklisted and losing a large portion of your income/career so people basically aren't fcking around like that. It's hard enough to "get in" and get a job at that level so people are pretty protective of who gets hired, it's definitely a "who you know" or "who trusts you" thing to getting a film-set career job. A lot of departments, stunts especially, will be multi-generational families within them.

I'm allowed to go anywhere. Nothing really exciting or crazy is happening on the lots these days, like maybe someome might have someone visit their trailer but post #metoo people just dont bring that shit to work anymore.

Generally basecamp isn't near set and you'd actually have to get someone to load you in a van to get to a location. And getting onto the lots is drivethrough checkpoint then parking, then you're maybe still a vanride to an actual stage.

I work multiple shows, and have done dozens and dozens as well as features. They are almost all completely mediocre and forgetable.

It's actually a union department here in LA under IATSE local 80. Basically some guys will own a trailer and they will get hired to a show and that's your crafty, sometimes those guys will own multiple trailers and technically work as many shows as they have trailers at once and will be an LLC "company," so basically every show uses a different crafty (usually referred to by the name of the department head) though sometimes like in a case with a dude with multiple trailers they might be similar between shows.

A lot of shows however will use the same CATERING companies, and in some cases with the lots there are restrictions about who you can hire. At Warner Brothers you cant bring in outside foodtrucks or even coffee trucks, you gotta use theirs.

Not really, getting immediately fired is usually for something like an NDA breach. Usually what happens is a DNR (do not return) meaning you just... aren't on the next days callsheet.

That's actually a SAG contractual question and will depend on the contract. Also the term "location" in your question is a bit nebulous. As stage is a location, then you might have near locations and distant locations. However as Walking Dead is produced and made in a "third area" it is considered local to people working on it, and people will move to Atlanta for years at a time to work in a "3rd area." So the crew is all working as local, as well as most of the above the line. As per individual contracts some might be getting flown out and put up at Air BnBs for weeks at a time, some might get direct business class flights to land the day before a few days of their shooting and then might peace out on a flight when they finish their work for that episode.

However if I am working at a show at say, Universal, and they want to go shoot down in San Diego for a week - then yeah have to put the whole crew up in hotels and pay a per diem and shit.

Films are similar, but they can be split between units. Like Transformers Knights of whatever would have a Hong Kong unit, a UK unit, an LA unit, and all of those would be different crews hired locally and the producers/cast/director would just be the ones flying around. Either the producers would schedule this as basically three distinctly different shoots or it would fall on the UPM and 1st AD to breakdown the script in such a way to set up the different shooting phases and produce a oneliner and dood (day out of days).

TV shows are basically produced episodically with each episode being its own shoot done over the course of a weeek or two. Sometimes you might stick in a scene from another episode (referred to as crossboarding). As one episode shoots the director, 1st AD, and Key 2nd AD of the other episode will be in prep scheduling out their locations and timing.

So a TV show will usually have two sets of 1st AD and Key 2nd AD that will alternate odd/even episodes.

Well the dressing in this case was owned by the production/production company. While it came out of the production design budget, they didn't essentially own it.

It was a poorly organized production office and a difficult to work with director. It was also some indie-level non-union ADs that weren't really up to dealing with the higher level of talent this particular one had.

Oh yeah, we get paid if an actor is six hours late and we have been sitting there doing nothing. There's also something called a kill fee. If somoene hires me to make a movie for two months and books me ahead of time, my contract might have a kill fee - usually half rate, so that if their actor drops out or something and they can't shoot it (keep in mind I have been turning down work because they had me booked for those two months) they gotta pay me out half of what I would make.

Impossible to say, completely depends if you are trying to shoot a scene at day or night, how much costuming needs to happen (you got 300 period piece extras? Expect 3 hour precalls and costumes hair and makeup are starting at like 4am)

depends on the scale of production and the scope of what you're shooting. Most of what is spent on comedies is basically for the talent. But like star wars? Oof.

Oh absolutely. Sometimes its just tiptoe around them, sometimes it talk to a producer, sometimes it's calling HR. Sometimes you just cuss them out and then they are nice to you.

I have a rate card, I get paid the specific rate based on the scale of the production. Residuals if applicable are a part of this.

Experience is usually reflected by title, like in the camera dept the 2nd AC is not as experienced as an Operator (and you have to work your way up in the union) so the operators rate is higher.

Honestly I haven't experienced anything taboo on sets other than maybe some people drinking or hitting THC vape pens. Way too many people on the lookout for shady shit nowadays. We even have intimacy coordinators (who are similar to stunt coordinators) for sex scenes to legally ascertain that everything is consensual.

Shady shit is more likely to happen on really indie shit or music videos.

I should point out that scripted tv/film, multicam tv, live events, commercials, music videos are all basically seperate industries. People who work in one of those formats rarely if ever work in the others.

That's more casting-couch kinda rumor shit, I work on set, union ones, and nothing particularily sketchy happens on union sets because there are so many eyes to report it. If someobody touched a kid on a union set the entire teamster department would probably curbstomp them, producer or not.

It's more annoying when you have a ton of child extras and you have this huge gaggle of parents who are like THAT GIRL PUSHED MY SON OUT OF THE CAMERA FRAME, or rushing on to set to wipe their kids face when we have a makeup dept for that. It's the bigger issue when the kid *clearly* doesnt want to be there and they're just fucking off to go pick their nose and the cameras are ready to roll and you've got actors missing because their mom/dads waved them over.

You sometimes will see the term OTLY "older to look younger" so you can cast a 18 year old to play a 14 year old and have them work adult hours and for higher levels of comprehension.

Kinda, production costs skyrocket when you start paying big names,. I mean what was that Star Was budget? Harrison Ford was 50million or something. It's not like there's a lack of good actors in hollywood, sometimes it just makes more sense with a good script to higher a lesser known actor because you dont need the big name for the draw.

I'm just sorta generalizing several experiences across shows and movies.

Tons of child actors have parents that are like the UPM or a producer, or like maybe they need a toddler and hey the key grip has a toddler why not just bring them in? I don't know anything about principal casting and that producer-level shit, I rarely even see producers most never go to set.
