there's nothing like spending an afternoon drinking Strong Zeros with your mates in the park, then wandering alleyways visiting izakaya after izakaya loading up on yakitori, kushikatsu and meat until eventually you end up spending until last train at a tachinomi hanging out with randoms.
>decide to miss last train and drink until the sun rises because bars stay open until the last person leaves
best part is a glass of whisky or sake in most of those places is like $1.50 or $2 worth max.
compared to going to a bar in the west

I went somewhat recently. Cost me around $2500. That included all the money I spent on food, the flight (roundtrip), two weeks worth of rail passes which allows you to travel on the JR train lines for free (including bullet trains), and accommodations. We did AirBnB which I highly recommend. If you go with people, you can drop the price a bit on the AirBnB.
I really do recommend traveling to Japan if you have any interest. We went in November. Most touristy places had nearly no crowds. It was cold, but not snowing yet. It's seriously the best place I've ever been to. I'm going back next year, or year after. I can't stay way.
