Federal law does require this. But lots of restaurants adjust their employee's claimed tips to cover the gap so they dont have to pay for the difference. I've worked at 7 different places where my bosses made me do this. Servers should fucking unionize or strike.

See, I'm 26 and still remember being that clueless teen that wasn't just lazy, but didn't know what to do next even if I wasn't so I'd be bugging the boss every 10 minutes for directions. I now work with these teens who act just like I did. (mechanic so I'd rather them bug me than fuck up). If we raised minimum wage, would I still work with teenagers or would the company take too much of a loss trying to hire them and train them?

As a cook, I'd actually have a lot more respect for them if they did this. The fact that they don't only reinforces their image as no skill druggies. In most cases that's a fair assessment, but not in all. Some servers are badass, but most are shit

I know what you're getting at, and minimum wage jobs are mostly charity positions. Non essential jobs that are given out to the most vulnerable like store greeters for the elderly, or shelf stockers for kids.

I understand the drive to increase labor's bargaining power, but upping minimum wage would just see those charity positions go away.

Idk about wait staff but I know as a mechanic I get paid per jobs with what's called flat rate. So if the shop has no work for me I spend the day cleaning for free basically. Overall it's not a horrible deal, when you're good at it and it's busy you can double the hours you've actually worked. My shops been pretty slow but I managed 60 hours in 45 last week. Just makes it a bit more tricky to manage my Financials throughout the year

So maybe they'd only hire techs who'd gone to schools like uti, however if you know a mechanic ask him what they think of those schools and more likely than not they'll tell you they're useless. The hands on is far more important experience. I've always nicknamed uti kids under trained idiots. They're a type of dangerous that's a mix of ignorance and overconfidence that leads to blown engines from not replacing oil during a service or brakes falling off down the road.

I've worked minimum wage, and have hired minimum wage (I own a property developement company)
I can honestly say that none of the minimum wage possessions I've encountered are essential.
My average hourly wage is about 3x minimum atm, and the only people I've hired at minimum were kids with no skills who needed weekend work. Even then I usually just gave them $100 cash each day.

We actually had a similar problem in one of the labs I worked in, too many people with 'experience' on paper but had no idea what they were doing when hired. Hands on beats book learning every time

servers do way more than bring food and drinks, they have to clean, server more than one table, work registers, clean bathrooms (not just the tables) make sure orders are right, help the bar (if there's a bar, although not every restaurant has their servers do this) and also deal with customers treating them as if they only cater to the one table. lots of customers dont realize that they do alot and then complain about things they shouldn't, most of the time the only customers nice to servers are people that are or where servers, or have servers in their family, but then on top of all that servers are paid about 3 dollars an hour, way less than minimum wage, so honestly if you should at the least pay the minimum suggested tip of 20% and if they put up with customers bullshit and was super nice then the customer should at the least do a little more
