The problem was never if anyone believed Trump was guilty. Practically 100% of the Republicans believed that Trump did abuse his power.
They just didn't believe that abuse of power warranted his removal from office.
There's a big difference here.
Think of it this way: if Trump orders his secret service driver to park him in a no parking zone, that's still illegal. But is it something that would remove him from office? Of course not.
The Republicans were either too stupid, too afraid, or too corrupt to equate flagrant abuse of power as something warranting removal from office.
The Democrats were just too dumb and backed themselves in a corner. There was no way this was going to go their way, but there was also no way they could have just let this go with all the ranting they did. They just didn't have foresight.
In the end, both parties lose. Republicans are patting themselves on the back now, but when a Democrat eventually gets elected, they're going to find giving Trump a free pass is also going to give that Democrat president precedence to do whatever he wants, and they're going to cry 10x more than they did during the Clinton and Obama administrations combined.
Both parties are just neutering themselves in the future.
