I agree that FF7 gets a lotta hype considering when it came out and being the first 3D FF title. I think a lot of the hype surrounding FF7 is what created FF8 fanbois who have literally no taste. The only thing redeeming about FF8 was the card game.

You can literally beat the entire game without grinding. Story doesn't drag.

... what...? The only bland character out of the bunch is Red XIII, and that's largely because he could be snipped from the entire story and no one would notice... except for furries.
Guy has no reason to tag along after being sprung from shrina HQ. He all of a sudden becomes semi-relevant when you hit cosmo canyon. Then sulks right back into the background never to be heard from again really.
Though... having a Clifford the dog knock off in the party does count for something.

Gotta disagree with a lot of this overall. The game itself is amazing, but I will agree that in terms of straight gameplay / storyline, it's probably not quite as good as its reputation. It's fucking great, but there are better games out there in specific areas. And that's coming from someone who has played it through at least 5+ times.
But in terms of the effect it had on gaming, from a technological (graphics, gameplay etc) and societal perspective (being the first true Japanese RPG hit outside of Japan), it is definitely not overrated. It is a landmark in gaming.
