Its actually a great design. Its a folding box cutter. These were made and sold for construction workers and tradesmen. Old style box cutters ate fairly large and not really comfortable to carry, they end up in the toolbox. these newer folder designs feel just like a pocket knife. Its a rather good idea in my opinion. Also fairly inexpensive usually under $8 US

My favorite EDC is an MTECH OTF with a 4" blade. It's not the best knife ever. But the *snick snick* is really satisfying. It's super fun to play with, and super easy to take care of. My dad and I took apart a much larger OTF knife and we learned about how they work, with the stupidly simple double pulley system of springs and a basic locking system. Really incredibly simple and awesome machine. Love that little OTF mf'er

It's large and intimidating with plenty of reach and designed for fighting with. it's also beautifully designed and ergonomic. The tip design is to avoid snapping the blade when it penetrates bone and to allow the point to be retained. It opens almost as fast as a switchblade when the ARC-lock is depressed and the blade flipped over.

As a collector of knives (with a $26K collection), I can assure you I've spent some serious cash on custom Russian and Japanese steel. But for a fighting knife, the best one I've handled/owned is the Junglee Hattori Fighter with the cocobolo/nickel/krayton grip. Perfectly balanced and quite a work of functional art. Good luck finding anything but the Baby Hattori, unless it's a knockoff from China.

For a once-commercially made blade, it was affordable 20 years ago. Today I've seen the genuine ones sell for above $2K. But that's just due to their status as a quality fighting knife. When you get a knife made by one of the top knifemakers, you need to be sure they aren't just creating wall-art. And that's going to cost you thousands if they're capable of doing a good job.

Shaving razors make horrorable weapons or cary knives, the blades are very thin and fragile, the handles are covers and dont afford blade control. Your only real grip is the two inch blade tail. A better choice would be a folder with a strait blade. Im partial to this one.

depends on how they do the billet as well as how they shape the blade. Stacked billet rather than folded, and grinding the blade angles to shape it rather than hammer the shape and you will get a more uniform damascus. I personally prefer doing it the old fashion way, looks better to me.

Thanks. Compared to the MASSIVE folder next to it (the Pentagon Elite II) it's certainly larger but this photograph makes them both look quite small. Compare it to the shot I posted above it to gauge their size.

But a large knife can't be carried everywhere. I try to observe the law wherever I can in the city though when I'm in the bush or mountains I'll carry a much larger knife. Usually two. One is a Gerber "Little Rock" and another is the Cold Steel Trailmaster which has a blade that's about a centimeter thick. There's a reason for that... because it allows you to hammer down on the back of the blade to cut through heavy timber to create shelter. I have some San Mai III blades from Cold Steel in my collection but it is my belief that they are overpriced for what you get and I have a feeling (as a collector) that Quality Control from Cold Steel may vary from model to model.

The old Damascus steel blades from the middle centuries were wrought using nitrogen from the bodies of live slaves - but as time went on, Europeans found that quenching the steel in wet animal skins had the same effect. But the Damascus pattern usually isn't visible without acid etching the blade - which reveals the pattern made by the layers of various metal rods used to forge the blade.

You don't have to spend a lot of money to buy a decent quality blade. You just need to buy the right blade for the right use. Any knife, even one from the Dollar Store can kill. And trust me when I say this but you don't ever want to harm another person in your life if you can help it.

But a knife can deter crime and it can give you a means to survive a dangerous encounter when your car has left the road and is on fire or you are lost in the wilderness. You can use it to deal with wild animals or to protect yourself in the event of something unpredictable. But foremost, a knife should be used as a utility tool.
