Nothing, I have a phone so I don't need a watch.
Watches are useless unless you have a specific use case - if you wear them as a fashion item, you're removing the whole origin and main purpose of a watch meaning you are not a true watch aficionado.

I wear one so I can check the time quickly without having to pull out my phone, because that's slower and potentially rude or inappropriate in some contexts.

Thats Why, I love watches habe about 12/13. it’s not just fashion. Its a easy way to look what time it is in all situations.

Boys look at their phones. Men look at their watches.

Real men carry a sundial.

>Watches are useless unless you have a specific use case - if you wear them as a fashion item, you're removing the whole origin and main purpose of a watch

When wristwatches were first invented they were literally considered trinket-tier flashy jewelry for women.. They became popular for men only when World War I and aviation picked up, and men found themselves in positions where digging up a watch out of their pocket to tell time became too impractical or even impossible, in a context where telling time by the minute at a single glance could be VERY important.. And that was in a time when pocket watches (which are already a lot smaller and more handy than your average phone today) didn't have lock-screens, key codes or other crap that stand in the way of a quick glance at the clock.

>Thats a small watch

It's 40+mm, 43mm including crown. That's not small by any margin. In fact, it's just about the maximum size that is still pretty imo.. Best trend in the last years is that manufacturers are moving away from the fucking huge pieces they've been putting out in the past decade.

If I have to wear a watch I like a small little diving watch with a velcro watch band. Those are good for not only staying on my arm but also not being large and preventing movement of my wrist. I don't need 500 million functions on it, just the basic stuff is good enough for me, I'm a cheap date.

>Looks like a wall clock on your wrist...

Intentional design, too. It contains the movement (the clockwork itself) as The chapter ring around the numerals, that contains the indexes and illuminating bars are all added to make it bigger. The movement itself sits completely under the inner circle..

These days people are all over rubber straps for diving watches. Those seem pretty stable too.

Here's one my mom gave me as part of her estate, I never use it but it's pretty funny.

>Yeah that Micky Mouse one is an old one so it's quartz, it just needs winding once in a while.

Quartz needs electricity, so not a quartz in that case. Also almost certainly not as accurate as 20k luxury mechanical watches in that case.. A lot cuter though.

Attached: file.png (704x939, 794K)

I'm not a watch expert, I do know that it's a very old one and all it needs to function properly is a simple winding from time to time. It needs a new strap, that's the only thing that's worn out on it, the mechanism itself is perfectly fine.

A real GS spring drive is a very nice watch indeed.

The micky mouse watch is in a storage box which will take some take to take down from a closit and I don't care to do that right now.

Dope. So unfortunate that they don't sell Spring Drive in watches anywhere below about €2000,-

Yet, anyway.

Omega Seamaster circa 2006

Short version:
Mechanical watches need winding up, either from twisting the crown (hand-wound, like your Mickey watch likely is) or from a rotor that is behind the movement, and winds the watch as you move your hand (automatic). Most modern mechanic watches have both ways of winding, though not all of them. Winding compresses the main spring, and the watch keeps time by having that spring unwind in a controlled manner via a balance wheel that makes it 'tick-tock' at a set pace..Usually they tick about 4 times a second, making for a pretty smooth sweep of the seconds-hand (if it has one).

Quartz watches are run by a battery and a coil that send a pulse of electricity through a little piece of quartz chrystal, causing it to vibrate a a certain (high!) frequency. A little chip counts the vibrations, and makes the seconds had (if it has one) go 'tick' every second, almost exactly. You can usually recognize quartz watches from the distinct. tick-stop-tick-stop, compared to the smoother tick-tick-tick-tick on mechanical watches. Quartz also lends itself to digital displays, since it's all coils, chips & electricity.

Often solar powered these days btw, so no more battery switches.

That's the main distinction between quartz and mechanical, for dummies. (mostly because I am a dummie and don't know how any of this shit ACTUALLY works.. just the concept)

Cool exception is Spring drive:
These watches have a quartz crystal but no battery. They use a rotor and a spring and Japanese space magic, to tickle the quartz crystal to generate small jolts of electricity, which then does Japanese space-magic things with a magnetic brake, telling the movement 8-times a second if it's too slow or too fast so that it's continuously correcting itself to keep proper time.. The sweep on these watches is truely smooth. No ticks, just a continuous rotation of the seconds-hand, which would be too fast, but is slowed down by that magnetic braking system.

I don't know, it's some type of quarts or something.

Attached: IMG_20200213_203501.jpg (3264x2448, 856K)

the 8 ticks a second you are thinking is closer to high beat mechanical. knock off spring drive of space magic does not tick say all, it's completely smooth. if you put your ear next to it, it makes no sound.

I have a Bulova precisionist that has a second hand which sweeps very smoothly. It's quartz. Not sure how they accomplish it though. It is very accurate.

Don't like those skeletonised hands tbqh.. Do they still make them with sword-style hands?

Lovely. Might have to pick up one of them radioactive watches one of these days.. So much cooler than lume-paint.

can you take this other one off of me too? they always tell different time unless I wear them everyday. but I don't want to look beta wearing two watches.

Attached: IMG_20200213_114427.jpg (3264x2448, 1.15M)

>the 8 ticks a second you are thinking is closer to high beat mechanical. knock off spring drive of space magic does not tick say all, it's completely smooth. if you put your ear next to it, it makes no sound.

That's what I said. Spring Drive is completely smooth, but part of the movement is constantly (IIRC 8 times a second, but I could be off) 'telling' the hand if it's too fast or too slow. The hand itself just sweeps, and the quartz-regulator does something that magnetically slows the movement down to an accurate pace. You don't see this obviously, its just smooth to the eye.

I know, Bulova is a notable exception. They also have some pre-Quartz electrical watches (operated by Tuning forks IIRC, I think they were called accutrons) that look goofy as fuck, and also run completely smooth. A guy in the WT threads on /fa/ has a bit of a collection of those things. Very cool.

>pic related
Accutron indeed, needed google. Also, these things ACTUALLY buzz because of the tiny tuning fork inside.
