Well pre-9/11 there was more decorum politically and you could actually talk. Old Cred Forums was very libertarian and anarchist so between reading intelligent anons' discussions and my local library, that's honestly how I learned. McCain/Obama were the last real bipartisan force we had that tried to ignore party lines when they could unfortunately but you could see different viewpoints working together.

Definitions are important. Learn them, then apply them when reading the news. It helps to find one new story and read seven different national and international reports on it. People arguing within your country will have different views...foreigners disinterested/with no stakes in something will give another version. Applying those definitions to the multiple versions might help you understand different mindsets. It's not easy though, especially since opinions of what is "left" or "right" shifts and, although there is the laughable idea that there are only two sides, makes it easier for the average American to understand.

I would look at the historic formation of different idealogies too. The ones I can think of would be: libertarianism, classical liberalism, tenants of centralism (and how it's different across time/regions), anarchism (was a real US party and they fought as a unified group in Spain and Russia). There's old systems too like authoritarian or religious groups that were pro-monarchies. Republics as a whole are important to understanding US structure in general.

I mean, it definitely depends on the sect. I know the more liberal sects which let you in if: you marry a Jew, your mother (some say either parent now) was Jewish, maternal line in general is Jewish (they were invaded a lot so Persians, Romans, etc, who killed a Jeweish soldier and fucked his wife would technically just be making more Jews. Open mined ones will let anyone in if you just go in and show them you're willing to convert and are serious. Others probably won't just let anyone in.

Adding to this... If you know anything about the Japanese legal system, you'll note they have a 99% conviction rate. This is because they never prosecute unless it's a closed shut clear cut case. Dude's a liberal.. he's all for gay marriage, trans and drug legalization. He even said he would vote Bernie. The only thing he ever said against trans is that he's against men to women trans competing against women, especially if not all party are aware of it.
