That being said, I always tip towards 15% - 20% because I get the struggle and it really can be a thankless job. But I don't feel it's required of me, and it shouldn't be in place of proper payment.

Depends on where you're eating.
If you're at a place that uses paper napkins, then 10%-15% is acceptable.
If you're at a place that uses cloth napkins, then you want to go 20%-30%.
Then you're looking at somewhere around 40% if you're at a place that has 3-4 waiters for your table.

You get tipped depending on your service, you probably suck as a server and never bus your own tables.

It means that the waitstaff has the opportunity to make as much money as they want. Not to say I don't think the minimum amount should be adjusted, but eliminating the entire system is bad practice. Working at a restaurant is also very flexible with my schedule for school.
