OK - so it seems like Photoscape X is superb at bringing out the detail, where there are sudden changes of:
colour; or brightness; or contrast;
but it does that (at least on "coloured pencil" edit - that I have primarily been using)
at the expense of subtle & gradual changes of colour gradient and intensity/saturation
(it is essentially "differentiating" the image mathematically);
..... also, it does that very efficiently and effectively.
GIMP is very good at adding those colour gradients back into an image, by adding another layer upon which to superimpose the original image, while giving very good control over the intensity of that colour overlay by using brightness, contrast and opacity, (etc. ?).
I need to play with this some more to get to the next level of this amazing (PhotoScape) program.

I was getting seriously good artistic effects on photo manipulation back then (maybe 25 years ago)
..... but I have not seen anything to match it

sure I only downloaded it about two hours ago and have only been trying it out on a small number of images, thus far, in order to assess what it might be capable of doing:
and I am already completely blown away by the potential of what can be achieved with a couple of free programs - one of which I had not even heard or three hours ago.
Scoff at it if you like, but:
in this thread, OP has opened a new awareness of what might be possible with this particular program.
