I work Casual Time at an elderly Rest Home for the extra pay.

Basically helping old people get about their daily lives within the property.
Showers, getting dressed and wiping asses.

Most are pretty independent but might need a quick hand getting a shirt over their heads or getting up out of their chairs.

However there is also a Hospital section of the Rest Home where the elderly are totally dependent on your help.

They can't stand and walk, they can't go to the toilet themselves or even lift food to their mouths to eat.

Most can't even speak and will sit in their bed all day pissing and shitting their adult diapers .

They get fed at mealtimes, showered every second day, diapers changed on the hour and their positions changed in bed to prevent sores.

That is their lives.
Eat, shit, sit and watch tv.

It's disturbing. To think that is all they have to look forward to until they die.
And how the human body and mind ages is terrifying to see up close.

How your skin is like tissue paper, bruised and and swollen all the time and how your mind is basically fucked and you can't comprehend anything.

To top it off, these people rarely have family and visitors to see them. Most never even once until they're on their deathbed.

Alone, in pain and with a stranger wiping the shit out of your butt crack just to dress you back together and put you in front of day time television for the rest of the day.

Attended a couple of funerals in Japan. When the tray of ashes are brought out of the oven the whole family/friends are there. The ashes are brought to a private room where the guests pick the remaining bone fragments up with these oversized chopsticks and place them into the urn. Im an epileptic and had some seizures in my life. It feels like you are getting sucked out of this world. I always try to fight it when i feel it happening but only succeeded 2 times or so. You know the cosmic horror from lovecraft? It has something similar to it. Your visions starts to warp and go blurry on parts while something speaks in the back of your head to let go and let it happen. Not in any particular language or voice you recognize, but in a deep big sound. The worst part is waking up tho. Not because your body is in pain but because you see without comprehending. Imagine seeing clearly but not recognizing forms or depths or anything you just see. I think dying and being born must feel like that.

I work as a CO in a state prison, most of the population at my facility are mentally ill. I've seen grown men eat there own shit, I watched an inmate mix pee and someone else's feces in his mouth and attempt to spit it at me. I watched someone gouge out his eye with a staple then eat it. Just yesterday an inmate ripped open his own stomach and began to eat his intestines. I had an inmate throw his penis down the gallery after severing it off with a copper wire. Nothing seems to phase me anymore, life has become boring since these things occur far too regularly. Nobody understands

I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up, I have 2 Bachelors degrees. One in Criminal Justice and the other in Accounting, I was a forensic accountant before this. I hated the mundane routine of it all, I love/hate the action and ever-changing environment of my job. However I would never recommend it and the toll it has taken on my mental/emotional health has caused most of my family and friends outside of corrections to turn their backs on me.

Not something that happened to me, but:

It's truly fucked up, but the thing is that there is a major change happening in corrections where there is a focus of treatment of mental illness/health for inmates. There are mental health professionals working in the prison systems that offer services to inmates to prevent/treat mental illness that occur or are triggered by incarceration. However, make no mistake these men are highly dangerous, so much so that treatment anywhere else would be dangerous to civilians.

I wish I could tell you why I have continued my career in Corrections. I'm not sure if it's because I have good rapport with the majority of the inmates at the facility, I've helped some stop self-harming and grow as individuals. They've thanked me and I have had their families hug and thank me on their release or during a visit because I was able to help them and they've spoken my name to them. It might be how I view my co-workers as family, we hold a bond that can only be forged by going through the things we've encountered together and facing life-threatening situations without fear to protect each-other and I feel that I need to continue to be there for them. To me at times, it feels worth it to sacrifice some of my mental health and face emotional distress for those moments.

Saw a guy on a motorcycle get hit by a semi once. I was sitting at a greyhound station (my gf dropped me off there every morning to be picked up by the crew i worked with) and heard a motorcycle unwinding like all hell. Even though the truck slammed on the brakes, it was well past where I could see before the guy started bleeding, but that sound was blood-curdling.
