first two were great, even if aliens does seem to drag on a bit too long. introduction of the queen was an incredible piece of work. three wasn't bad and the director's cut with the chestburster at the end was a fitting send off for ripley. i only watch resurrection so i can pound my pud watching winona ryder in that body suit.

as the budget shrinks, the quality of writers, producers and directors also decreases.

I agree with everything except rocky. Only rocky 5 sucked. 1-4 were pretty good, and rocky Balboa was excellent.

Aliens is the only film in cinematic history where a woman takes charge in a dangerous high stress situation and it is 100% absolutely believable and everything feels true and nothing is forced.

also if you have a recurring star (like Sigourney, Arnold, Bruce, Sly etc) then proportionally more of the budget is taken up by star wages.

don't forget studio interference, creative differences, multiple writers (usually they lack cohesion and a shared vision and direction for the movie/series) studio editing (ruined Alien 3) and the need for a cash in - most franchises have dedicated fans who will (mostly) watch anything with the franchise name attached.

Just MHO, but everything after Rocky 2 sucked for me... agree that Balboa was pretty good though, but not great like 1 and 2.

Hollywood standard money-making process: demand the same high rate of return, but get lower and lower budget in which to accomplish it. Then write the whole thing off as a loss using their "patented" accounting processes. Don't you know that no movie ever makes a profit?

The first one is a tight, character driven story.
There are very few flashy special effects, and what special effects there are were done manually rather than CGI as that wasn't really an option back in 1978/79.

The first one is a masterclass in film making - the use of a small cast, limited special effects and concentrating on story telling rather than trying to wow the audience with yet another explosion - it's a masterpiece.
It's a real shame what the rest of the movies devolved into except for Aliens which is another classic of tight storytelling and limited characters and sets.
