Stigma makes a lot of people to avoid therapy, and it has an enormous effect on the economy to have untreated people unable to work because they can't/won't make an appointment with a therapist

Yeah, I get that. Sorry. I actually have mental issues myself, but I had the good luck of having enough money to pay for the therapy, and to live away from my parents so that I can go in secret to therapy without having to tell them.
My issues come from the way I was raised, my mom had mental issues too and she basically made me the same as her. Maybe if the world were different, I would be happy right now, but the world is the way it is, and we need to make things the best we can together with the world we have

I know that I have mental issues, and I know others have it too. However, nobody knows that I have them, because I've never told anyone in real life. Because of that, many people around me probably think they've never met anyone with mental issues, and they don't care/don't think much about it.
This isn't like gay rights activism. There are a lot of people with these issues who can't talk about it, and even if it stops being a taboo, they still won't talk about it. It's for this reason that we must do everything we can to talk about it on their behalf, to raise awareness, because people suffer a lot, and unless people talk about it, the big pharma, the governments, the politicians, etc. won't do anything to help

i used to work with a full-on leftist/sjw/hipster and once got on the subject of mental illness and how its an issue within the context of the rise in mass shootings. while he half-heartedly agreed, he just couldn't pull himself out of the college indoctrination that guns are the REAL problem, that ideology of the right is the REAL problem. it was sickening and saddening to see someone in that state.

"mental illness" is just a term we use to officially stigmatize and condemn certain undesirable (anti)social behaviors. What constitutes an undesirable behavior is ultimately culturally subjective. The APA gets together periodically and basically votes on what to consider a "disease".
Think of it like this, homosexuality WAS a mental illness several decades ago. It was, it wasn't just thought to be a mental illness, it WAS a mental illness. Now it's not.
A mental illness is DECLARED, not DISCOVERED like a real disease.

I have a lot of anxiety, and I can tell you I don't bother anyone, but my ability to socialize, make friends or keep them, go to class, study, etc. have been impaired, I feel like absolute shit and I can't do much about it.

I don't doubt it, I've had lots of similar issues. But I don't agree with the way we've given so much legal/financial power to such a small group of quasi medical professionals in dictating what constitutes acceptable social behavior and what doesn't.
Certainly there are people with mental issues in real distress, but the way we've medicalized it and try to pretend it's the same as a bonafide disease... just doesn't sit well with me. Too much potential for abuse of power.

Psychologists are doing their best with the help of the scientific method and, even though this is a field that it's just starting, they've helped a lot of people and they will help a lot more while this science gets developed.
Your gut feeling is ok, but if we have to trust in someone, I'd rather do it on the fact-based science of psuchology

Yeah, I guess I just wish we could have a more open/honest discussion as a society about this stuff. It seems like psych professionals are so concerned about being taken seriously that they've had to take on the trappings of medical science, when it's... fundamentally something else.
I get it, maybe that's just what they had to do to get people to pay attention at all. But can you ever really empirically deal with peoples subjective mental states the way you would remove cancer from healthy tissue?
Like I said, I get it, hopefully the psych professionals can move beyond being quasi doctors and still have the clout they need to actually be heard and make some positive changes.
