Time and difficulty are a better way to determine tips than the bill's total.

$5 is fine. As someone who has worked tipped positions, you're really not going to offend someone with a "low" tip, and 5 bucks is 5 bucks as far as I care. Unless it's something like a big party, people aren't really going to pay much attention to how much you tip, there's too much going on anyway, and most restaurants let you tip with your card.

Yeah, I worked graveyard in a cafe attached to a casino. There's less customers, but I'm by myself and get all the tips (no busser either), so it's a tradeoff. I could expect a consistent $12-16/hr takehome working for min wage base pay. It's basically getting at least overtime pay relative to min wage. If you want to talk about low work for high pay, look at bartenders.
Although, if you're worried about markup like that vs cost to get it made and to you, you should look into half the shit you buy.
