And imprisoning addicts and the mentally ill is a really expensive and really inefficient way to deal with the problem. Put them in jail for a year for vagrancy? Do you think that's going to leave them in a better position to beat homelessness when they get out? Put them in jail in a perpetual cycle of petty offenses? You're paying 100K/year to make them not homeless but behind bars.

Blaming others is what got those people there in the first place. I don't have to imagine what they are going through because I have been there. You meet these people who have just stopped trying. If they were on fire they would demand you put them out or their deaths are your fault without ever lifting a finger to help themselves. What we need is less people who don't know what true suffering is or how common it is to stop trying to weigh in for these people until they taste it fir themselves and see how easily it is overcome.

America is the richest country in the world but we have third-world stats when it comes to hunger, homelessness, education, inequality, incarceration, preventable diseases including 'deaths of despair' (drug OD's, etc).

We either have to accept that America sucks ass, or we have to realize that if poorer countries in Eastern Europe can provide things like specialized/higher education and good healthcare to their citizens, then we can too.

One wing of one party is pushing for that. Everyone else is pushing for us to accept that America is no longer a developed country.
