Slaves were owned by the wealthy, your average Roman outside of the cities would be a regular old yeoman farmer type.

Regular laborers or shopkeepers in cities would not have slaves, many people in the larger cities were essentially layabouts collecting food and money from the state.

Maybe a few ricer merchants might have a slave or two but they certainly were not a common thing in an average Roman household.
