The survival of humanity depends on our ability to overcome many short- and long-term existential threats. Some threats are self-imposed and some natural. Grinspoon lists these threats: (1) ballooning world population growth, self-imposed, (2) global nuclear war – self-imposed; (3) human-induced global warming – self-imposed; (4) killer asteroids and comets – natural (5) cyclical long-term natural climate change – natural; and (6) eventually a much hotter sun – natural.

That being said what are our options? What's our best case scenario?

We're fucked.

>We can't cooperate or unite.
>We're ruled by rich, greedy fuckers.
>We're killing the planet
>We don't have anywhere else but Earth to live.
>We're not making a huge effort to get off this planet.
>None of this is gonna change anytime soon

Just enjoy what's left of your life. Everyone's life is out of their control, cancer could kill you this year, or a bus could kill you tomorrow.

Try to aim for happiness. Love, be kind, share with others. Have kids, or don't. Try to be an example to others. Lastly, enjoy the fact that you like so many of us are a miracle to begin with; self aware beings born of cosmic collisions and billions of years of evolution.

>We can't cooperate or unite
I don't believe this to be true
>We're ruled by rich, greedy fuckers
This may be true but may be in our favor
>We're killing the planet
I don't believe this to be true
>We're not making a huge effort to get off this planet
I can personally say this is untrue
>None of this is gonna change any time soon
I disagree, if anything the world is changing faster than ever.

Nice moral takeaway though.

A scenario I despise : an aristocracy emerge, global mode. They have technological powers that, generation after generation permit them to don't care about what happen on Earth and to the rest of mankind. Even if mankind-earth is doomed by a plague, dramatic climate change or a nuclear conflict, mankind 2.0 is still there, lets say on space stations like in this movie from that south africa realisator. I fear that the way we're taking slowly. And that's a scenario that could repeat itself during thousand of years, mankind earth survivors giving birth to civilisation thn giving birth to techno-aristocracy etc.. Sorry for my english

Universe heath death?

My other thread

Good enough english. Sounds terrifying but avoidable. We just need to balance our space exploration with our social welfare, and always make maintaining peace on earth our number one priority.

That really doesn't sound like a best case scenario. Did you even try to imagine the possibilities of tomorrow?

Oh were you stating that as our best case scenario? That's a good one. If that's the case I look forwards to it. How do you see us overcoming the death of our sun?

Yep, but I fear a part of mankind, the richest and powerfull one, make secession from the rest of us in the future. That's already something we can distinguish (at another level of course) in, lets say, Sao Paulo, with the wealthiest ones flying in their helicopters while the others are on the ground, suffocating in the torrid humid and polluted air, not to fear the gangs or kidnappers..

So it's avoidable, but we are not taking the way to avoid it, imho.

I think the rich love us and are in fact tortured by the fact we are unable to share the same privileges. I know there must be some exception to the rule but I believe most people are honestly good inside.

Mankind hasn't changed in millennia. We still fight wars over stupid man-made belief systems., and the strong continue to impose their will upon the weak.

While I would love for there to be a Utopian future for mankind, I just don't see it occurring. There will always be some who want to rule over others, even at the cost of the progress of all mankind.

You're farming for answers, and I don't know if I should give you one. But the fact that you can't come up with them on your own should be all the answer you need.

All you need to do is take a good, honest look at us.

A few good men will not change the reality of the situation. Good men are killed for sport.

I can try and come up with some but mostly everything I think of has been thought of but better and it's still not good enough. But I guess I only really started trying recently.

I see people suffering but I also see people striving and that gives me hope.

All it takes is one

Hope for what? More striving?

That goes both ways. And frankly, it doesn't take just one. One man cannot change the entire world in a single day with one act. There is no one thing. One man can easily be cut down by other men.

We have demonstrated with necessary clarity that we are unable to respond to long term threats, much like all other species. We KNOW what we're doing wrong, but we are unable to react properly to our faulty behaviour. We will consume resources and multiply until we out consume our own ecosystem, at which point famine and disease will cull us back to a stable population. Once we reach equilibrium, we will remain there until we are no longer recognisable as human beings. Extinction is inevitable.

>We can't cooperate or unite.
Except that the exact opposite is the case. Humans are the peak of cooperation. There isn't a thing in the known universe as cooperative as humans, for good reasons. Humans have long ago figured out that cooperation beats competition in almost all fields. Nations that cooperated, traded and shared have always outperformed nations that did the opposite. You are confusing cooperation and unification with being ruled by a single entity, which is a completely retarded idea.

>We're ruled by rich, greedy fuckers.
That's a leftist fantasy. The most creative, industrious and inventive people rise to the top, and by the processes of capitalism vastly increase the living standards of everyone else as a simple side-effect. The governments, at least in the west, are merely there to facilitate this. Government actors constantly try to destroy this with retarded shit like planned economies or socialism/communism, which is always a complete and utter failure.

>We're killing the planet
This is simply false.

>We don't have anywhere else but Earth to live.
Since Earth isn't going anywhere, we're good. The only real dangers to this are things out of our control, like Yellowstone exploding, a pole shift, or a celestial object colliding with earth. Even the black death, which ravaged Europe for centuries, was a catalyst for human advancement eventually.

>We're not making a huge effort to get off this planet.
That's a good thing. Technology isn't there yet. It would be a massive waste of resources to attempt this at the current stage of technology. Chemical propulsion is a joke.

>None of this is gonna change anytime soon
Except that human development is speeding up at a ridiculous pace. The worlds population climbs out of poverty at tremendous speeds. Technology is advancing at a ridiculous pace. Life is better, safer and more comfortable than ever before in the entire history of the known(!) universe.

Your post is a complete ideological mess of bullshits. It's to the point I'm wondering if you really live on Earth..... Return to Cred Forums to share your brilliant point of view, they are waiting for you, here !

What exactly do you disagree with?

What is your understanding of our equilibrium?

All.
My arguments : the real world. Not the fantasmatic one you seem to perceive through your ideological views

Imagine being the first person in the world to know something

Your disbelief is a huge factor in why these things are so true.

Ditto

The survival of humanity depends on individuals who decide that 99% of humans are useless and gets rid of them, making resources abundant for the last 1%, making it incredibly easy to become a space faring species

That's what I fear the most....

its not personal kiddo but if you are useless, you ARE useless. Its better for mankind

In that way, you are too, son !

well, actually I aint, I am part of the 1% that will wipe out the useless.
Its just business kiddo

My name is Justine Diane Pullen and I dedicate myself to trick people into giving me as much money as possible waiting for something in return even though I don't give anything later. I make them believe in projects that are false.

I am From Wick, Caithness, Scotland

Glamis rd

You'd like. I don't doubt that. I highly doubt the rest, son.
And in all case, we're not talking about the 1%, but the 1% of the 1%.
