First off, the assumption of some fundamental human characteristics that exist de facto isn't correct. Human nature is a meme, humans and simply a product of the environment they are raised in, humans minus society are basically apes. As for why officials went corrupt in the Soviet Union, the answer is that the bureaucratic mechanisms within the party and ruling organs of the USSR essentially saw themselves as above the physical labour of the country, hence making them servants of a system that didn't benefit them. The answer to this will be automation, where no worker will need to limit themselves to physical labour that will leave them excluded from the intelligentsia strata. There are other factors too, like external pressure. Despite what people who haven't studied Marxism well may think, external aggression actually pushes socialist countries towards socialist development. A good example is the comparison of the DPRK with Vietnam. The DPRK has managed to maintain its socialist economy despite the many hardships that have resulted from the collapse of the USSR plus years of western embargos, simply because the enemy is occupying half of Korea and they have to live in front of the barrel of a gun, permanently on alert. Vietnam on the other hand expelled the US, and ended up even being in friendly terms with them within a few decades, being used as US pawns against China. In the USSR, people had lost sight of what socialism meant. There was no strife or hardship, so many of them became apathetic. The USSR dissolved in 91, but it wasn't until 93 that people realized wtf was going on and started protesting. Really sad stuff
