The reason so many players chose Horde is because if you played Warcraft III you got so immersed and sympathetic to Thrall's cause, the Rexxar campaign also cemented that being pretty much the precursor to a Warcraft RPG in itself.

The Alliance campaign was pretty much just to play as the traitor ultimately fucking the kingdom over in his arrogance and extreme narrow-minded hunt for revenge.

If you already were a fan, chances are you'd jump at the idea of playing for Thrall, Cairne and Sylvanas instead of the treehugging lovey-dovey not as good as illidan duo, and some 8 year old low poly prince.
