To follow up on last thread, this is why I don't think Pearl belonged to Rose

1. Rose was made on Earth (Bismuth)

2. Pearl saying that they arrived on Earth (We are the crystal gems) and were amazed to find its worth and beauty. If Pearl arrived on Earth with Rose, Rose wouldn't have been amazed since she already knew Earth (point 1)

3. Pearl mentioning that she learned how to sword fight thousands of years after being made. If Pearl really belonged to Rose, that kind of thing would have happened way earlier.

4. Rose shattering Pink Diamond caused Pearl to be free. But if Pearl belonged to Rose, then she was already free by default. No need to shatter PD for that.

5. There is no tension and no big revelation in Pearl merely being Rose's pearl. No reason to hide it from the viewers for so long if it was something as simple as that.

I've really been wracking my mind for the last couple of days (slow work shifts) or putting to words exactly why the setup in Steven Universe allows Sugar to perfectly tell her SJW stories (not expressing an opinion on whether this part is good, but we're all aware that this show is atleast 10% propaganda).

I think it comes down to two facts

1. Supermen (essentially Humans +) are inherently easy to tell stories with. You don't have to explain their time, ability to multitask, skill for every situation, or ability to recover from damage. This allows Sugar the benefit of acting out oldschool cartoon antics (boulder falling on Peridot) without breaking a running plot of episode to episode connectivity. The last part of this is that, as everyone knows, having the lesbians in the show be space rocks makes it easier to get past the cartoon network execs, the same way Superman was made an alien when in reality he was representing American immigrants.

2. The most important fact is that leaving fusion as a kind Schrodinger's cat for any kind of intimacy is fucking brilliant. On one hand it makes sense that there's no direct analogue between something as alien as fusion and human love, friendship, or sex, and on the other Sugar's made an obvious effort not to let people confuse this fact while she shows characters fusing for several reasons. It is the MOST unique part of the storytelling of the show and why I consider fusion to be the most important plot element of the show, even moreso than Steven's own coming-of-age story.

Tl;dr : Steven Universe is special because it has adopted and developed malleable plot elements that still hold up quality wise.

I agree on both counts. The show has succeeded in casting a wide net. There's tons of things Sugar could still introduce that would make sense. (Fanwank example that won't happen because Ruby/Sapphire are the shows sweethearts, but if they broke up I wouldn't put it past Sugar to introduce discussion of physical dependency as an analogue for drug addiction). However, doing this successfully is also knowingly muscling out other creators from telling something too similar. So it's possible some potentially could not just be wasted, but actually lost.

I feel they're curving some issues with fusion by touching on the negative elements, starting with Lapis/Jasper's abusive relationship.

I think Sugilite and Sardonyx both suffer from the same subtle problem and that is Garnet's pride. Multiple times she has described herself as being essentially a fusion master, but both of her fusions are unstable in some way.

I think this is a subtle reference to the type of person you meet sometimes in life, the person who is perfectly appreciable in certain environments, but completely fucking annoying in others. In the show, I think Ruby/Sapphire are so well balanced as Garnet that adding anyone to that recipe causes disaster.

Opal is similarly stable appearing, but I think if you had a hot-head Ruby fuse with Opal they'd be unstable as well.
