Underrated as fuck artists

underrated as fuck artists

Legit one of the most talented comics artists ever. No idea why he's so obscure.

Joseph Michael Linsner is his full name, btw.

me

Grant is a god. But he does concept work for Hollywood now. He'll never do a comic

>> David Yardin

...

Oh really? I was mostly familiar with his superhero art. I didn't know he had given that up.

...

...

...

Probably not going to pencil a comic but he did do the hiphop variant for all new wolverine

...

>But he does concept work for Hollywood now. He'll never do a comic
Just like Guy Davis

Literally the greatest artist in the world and only like 10 people know about him.

Fucking fantastic

...

Pretty sure he did the art for Last Exile

...

...

Finally some Linsner love on Cred Forums. Dawn is my waifu.

I was thinking about old porn artists. Like, artists that weren't terrible that had been around so long everyone would know about them.

And Blue Sub 6

And the reason for that user, is that when ya'll motherfuckers post images you don't post the names of the artists!! It's an ouroboros that keeps the logic rolling in a circle, man.

Darwyn Cooke R.I.P.

> Nick Manabat died at the age of 24 from Hodgkin's lymphoma
> his entire published body of work is 4 back up stories in Jim Lee's Deathblow

Yardin is a saint. He puts in so much work into making his women look and feel different. I bought the storm mini because he was doing fill in work.

Oh I know but he did interior work way way way back. I feel like Guillem March doesn't get the love he deserves that guys amazing

...

I wouldn't call him underrated. Cred Forums always LOVED his work.

...

One of the few people I know that still ink with a goddamn brush. My generation is full of such pussies who wouldn't touch anything not digital.

>I feel like Guillem March doesn't get the love he deserves that guys amazing
Strongly seconded, I am salty as fuck he hasn't got interiors since Talon.

Yeah, but /co doesn't represent the whole of the readership. Only the heads ever seemed to know who he was. Most casuals get this dude confused with Bruce Timm like it was their job.

Risso is pretty underrated.

Brah pick up Monika it's him doing water color and inks. It's amazing. And yeah that's due to the catwoman backlash. Fuck'em though.

what about overrated?

...

...

He was legit excellent in his day.

But either way that's a subject for another thread.

...

...

I need him on a PG or Wondy or Storm book. He clearly loves those characters.

...

He did some covers for the most recent Storm book.

...

This never made it to press did it?

Range Murata? I've liked him ever since watching Blue Sub No.6 as a kid.

The series did but Clay Mann was the artist on its interiors.

Steve Mannion

I own all it so trust me I know lol. Storm is my favorite Marvel girl. She's a more haughty Wondy and I love that chip on her shoulder yet motherly attitude.

Ariel Olivetti

Yeah I remember March was meant to be doing both. But this specific cover never made it to print.

Him on Power Girl would be awesome.
Since Amanda Conner's run on the character they seem to want to push Power Girl with more exaggerated cartoony artist & this would be a breath of fresh air.

Trevor Von Eeden, mainly for his composition and storytelling. His technical skills have sadly degraded in recent years, unfortunately. But in his prime in the 80's he was a beast, too far ahead of his time. He did stuff with paneling that blows my mind. A page isn't enough, its best to actually read one of his unfortunate few issues to really get the full effect.

Spiteful Cunts.

Brian Stelfreeze does amazing things with anything from ink to paint. And his style always shines through. He has a Batman Black and White story which is fucking amazing just due to how high contrast everything is. Its a few scant shapes but he does so much with it.

Maybe a book about finding, training and maybe even sponsoring heroes that were once forgotten or never had the chance to properly shine.

>> Jay Anacleto
Bit stiff I will concede but great rendering regardless.

Oh man, the line of action on this page is fucking fantastic. What is his major work?

Yeah, Range Murata is GOAT

Travis Charest

I really just assume he's dead sometimes because him not getting work steadily makes no fucking since. And I don't see James Jean anymore either really but I think he's moved over to primarily fine art now.

...

...

Because he barely does anything outside of drawing Dawn.

...

I fucking wish, he's been doing harley quinn shit for some time now. He needs to pick dawn back up sometime soon.

...

Chris Wahl

Tonci Zonjic is one of the best modern cartoonists in the industry. If you dig Samnee you should really be checking out this guy's stuff.

He's also great for art advice and resources on Twitter, and a nice dude IRL

...

...

...

...

...

...

...

Batman Annual # 8 is probably his most popular single work. He also did a really interesting series called Thriller that's full of these amazing pages, but he didn't finish off the run.

...

Did you ever see his non-digital stuff? He actually looked like he was gonna be one of the greatest but then he went fully digital. His backgrounds are shit most of the times and you can tell the different objects are just pasted in an environment instead of drawn there. I wish he went back to pencil and ink.

beautiful

Mark Schultz, of Xenozoic Tales fame, or better known by the bombastic name of "Cadillacs and Dinosaurs" I think he mostly just writes Prince valiant now, unfortunately.

>My generation is full of such pussies who wouldn't touch anything not digital.

This isn't true at all you baka.

I'll check it out, cheers!

>when a fantastic traditional draughtsman goes full digital

Is there a worse feel? And their work is never fucking better as a result. I'll never go digital myself

Aqua-Borg was a fucking awesome idea

Brush inking is becoming a lost art, you gotta admit.

Is Mike Del Mundo underrated? I love his work

Goddamnit, I always wondered what happened to him. The dude was on his way to Godhood. His art is everything that Simone Bianchi wishes he could do.

Here's one:
Aron Weisenfeld
>spent years in the shadow of Neal Adams at Continuity
>spent years in the shadow of Jim Lee at Wildstorm studios
>finally develops fresh drawing style and storytelling skills
>bugs out to go paint waifs as a fine artist

had no idea he was dead. fuck

Peej only looks good when Connor draws her, imo

>His art is everything that Simone Bianchi wishes he could do.
But Bianchi is superb.

Vastly underappreciated.

Nestor Redondo

One of the most technically gifted comics artists EVER. Followed up Bernie Wrightson's run on Swamp Thing. Most of his other work is random fill-in issues of 70s DC horror anthology titles like House of Mystery, etc. Is nearly totally forgotten, but his hyper-realistic style is still stunning to this day.

...

Aw fuck I haven't seen that in years! That guy really was a beast. I remember tracking down his issues just for that splash page.

>dat composition
>dat inking
>dem textures
>dat anatomy and figure work

He even knew where not to render and let the eye rest, like the blank patches of grass and big black space behind Swampy (pushing him forward and making him the most important figure on the page).

Expert stuff

Does Mike Zeck count as underrated?

a shame she doesn't do more comic books

Yeah I'd say a bit, I feel it's so difficult to control, it's just easier to pick up a pen but the effect/look is really nice.

Artists like Ralph Meyer(pic related), Francois Boucq, James Harren and others I can't think of at the moment still use brush work and their stuff is fantastic. I definitely appreciate it when I see it.

Mark Texeira used to be a big deal in the 90s, but he seems to be mostly forgotten now. No idea if he's retired or if he's still doing stuff outside of comics, but he doesn't seem to have done any comic work in forever.

have you noticed, like in the CONVERGENCE mini series, they call back talented guys who know paneling, perspective and how to meet a deadline.,......only for some special project or something?

>Travis Char
I know what you mean, but I kind of like the phony nature of those backgrounds. It gives his digitally painted work a kind of stage backdrop feel. I get that he does it to save time, but I dig that aesthetic with his work.

Haven: The Broken City was hand drawn and that shit was awesome! It just seems like he's settled into a style that allows him to be efficient and productive at the same time.

Either way I am a huge proponent of his work.

Magic Mike was one of the most sought after artists in his heyday. Between Secret Wars, Kraven's Last Hunt and that first Punisher miniseries Zeck was a the top of heap.

I've always liked Simon Bisley. He did a lot of stuff on 2000 AD back in the day. His work on Slaine is beautiful.

One of the best ever.

ye

Bill Sienkiewicz

>he's been doing harley quinn shit for some time now
Wasn't it just one issue and a few odd pages?

Second.

The entire early 70s Filipino invasion was pretty good.

I get that they need to make room for new talent, or that the knowledge the vets have might be expensive in a shrinking market, but if they'd get dudes to run clinic on the kids out there maybe things would get better?

Wouldn't call him underrated at all. Not even close. Most of Cred Forums is probably familiar with at least his Marvel work.

Familiarity and be well regarded are two entirely different things. Think about professional athletes or actor's that everyone knows, that are not held in the same high regards as the "greats".

Sienkiewicz is "known" but I'm not so sure people consider him upper echelon.

That would would make him underrated, because dude is the shit.

Nice meme. His Daredevil work was amazing.

He a bunch of covers, one whole issue and right now he is working on another one. It's been years since he's done a dawn comic, and it's tearing me apart. I love that character so much.

Same with jimmy palmiotti, I'm waiting for all the Harley Quinn hype to die down so that he'll work on his other characters and maybe do some new stuff, but it seems that harley quinn is now one of DCs biggest characters now, so looks like we might never get another painkiller jane series.

Please, Sienkiewicz is a legend in the industry. His Harley variants are fucking amazing, too bad he's being wasted on that shit book though.

Agreed.

Here's a tip: don't bitch about people not knowing the name of your favorite fucking artist in a post where you don't include his name you pretentious shit.

bump

>too bad he's being wasted on that shit book though.

He's got an new series coming soon at Image with KSD

Only ongoings I know of are his time with J.M. DeMatteis on Captain American and a bunch of Master of Kung-Fu

Who the fuck used the monkey's paw?

That's exactly why he was so sought after. He was loved but not around much. Not unlike Art Adams who had no real ongoings in his entire career, up to and including his own book Monkeyman and O'Brien.

first time here... this is beautiful

If you don't know who Murata is in the first place you should really kill yourself.

Well, no wonder no one knows the artist then.

Dean Motter is among the most unique and most stylish comics artists ever, yet Cred Forums's never fucking heard of him.

>dead
>at 24
I have never been so pissed off.

That's a really neat comeback, user.

take a nap.

Pop artist Mitch O'Connell did a one-shot comic with Mike Baron of Nexus/Badger fame that was gorgeous. Sucks he didn't do more comics.

Juan Jose Ryp might be the best artist working in comics today, but he's guaranteed to remain ultra obscure unless he starts doing something other than variant covers for Avatar books.

He did all of Clone's interiors.
He did issues of Birds of Brey, Batwoman, Talon.

Aside from Clone (which didn't last that long), he's never been a regular interior artist.

He sells his work as if every page was a painting, that's why he takes so much time doing work, even years, jodorowski was really patient while working with him

He's Valiant exclusive today

RIP

His comic book work in this decade are all for Marvel and limited series to count. He still occasionally attends smaller cons.

Oh really?

He's working on Milligan's Britannia mini currently.

That worth reading?

The Frenchman who does Requiem Vampire Knight is under rated as fuck. Completely under rated.

these two look badass here. that is awesome

Went to middle school/high school with this guy and his brother. We were all so into comics back then. They were always so incredibly talented, glad to see they are getting respect.

I don't see anything impressive about this, though if he did last exile the mechanical designs were nice at least.

>hey guys. Lets apprecoate underrated artists but dont post their names because muh spoonfeeding! That would surely get them the spotlight!

Every weeab back in the day knew this guy.
He had his own toy series and had tons of art books.

Him and abE were big back then.

I'd like to second Travis Charest.
Fuck the nook he hid himself in.

what's wrong with her faaaaaaace

and then Superman damn near kills him in one hit and he stays rustled until Book 5.

Kenny Ruiz.

>implying anything's wrong with it

Travist is one of the best

Tom Raney

Colin Wilson
