Hey I was watching some of this. Did they purposely base him off of Bruce?

No, you're a tomato.

iirc they said the show took up a lot from B:TAS.

Oh yeah? Well why don't you 'negotiate' some goddamn pictures of Spider-Man on my desk before I fire you?!? Now get out of my office before I put this cigar out in your ass.

Is this any good? I think I remember seeing part of an episode when I was younger, but I'm not entirely sure.

The director of Big O used to work on Batman TAS. Roger isn't the only thing that looks like he walked right out of Gotham, there are several villains that would not be out of place in Batman's rogues gallery. Hell, a lot of Batman's villains would fit right in in Paradigm.

From the Wikipedia article about the designer:
>In 1996, Sato met with Kazuyoshi Katayama to begin work on The Big O. Until then, Sato's work consisted mainly of designing characters and supervising animation for anime series.
>The Big O is the first based on a concept of his creation and he considers it his magnum opus.[1]
>Sato's style is influenced by his "love of all things nostalgic."

From the article about the show itself:
>Before The Big O, Sunrise Studios was a subcontractor for Warner Bros. Animation's Batman: The Animated Series,[29][30] one of the series' influences.[5]

>Roger Smith is a pastiche of the Bruce Wayne persona and the Batman. The character design resembles Wayne, complete with slicked-back hair and double-breasted business suit.[31] Like Bruce, Roger prides himself in being a rich playboy to the extent that one of his household's rules is only women may be let into his mansion without his permission.[24] Like Batman, Roger Smith carries a no-gun policy, albeit more flexible. Unlike the personal motives of the Batman, Roger enforces this rule for "it's all part of being a gentleman."[32] Among Roger's gadgetry is the Griffon, a large, black hi-tech sedan comparable to the Batmobile, a grappling cable that shoots out his wristwatch and the giant robot that Angel calls "Roger's alter ego."[15][33]

>The Big O's cast of supporting characters includes Norman, Roger's faithful mechanically-inclined butler who fills the role of Alfred Pennyworth; R. Dorothy Wayneright, who plays the role of the sidekick; and Dan Dastun, a good honest cop who, like Jim Gordon, is both a friend to the hero and greatly respected by his comrades.[15]

Firstly, I'm not employed by you.
Secondly, you might want to change your tone towards me, or else Big O might gon' go full Final Stage on your sorry ass.

Schwarzwald was a legitimately good villain and character. Good design, cool mecha, memorable lines and motives. The English VA is also really fucking good.

>YFW AS funds a live-action S3 miniseries and Roger tools around in this in black (or even the black one on the bottom).

A boy has the right to dream.

Yes. pretty hype mecha anime

Very first thing I hear in my head upon seeing the thumbnail

I've also been playing Xenogears all day and I'm wondering how well Big O must hold up in a gear fight. No fancy karate moves but you probably don't need them when you've got piston powered punches that pulverize skyscrapers like card towers.

>That time Cred Forums came to negotiate.

Big O is really good show that stumbles at the end because the people making it expected a Season 3. Cool soundtrack, big stompy robot fights, Batman inspiration worn on its sleeve, and a host of good characters including best girl ever. It also helps that the Big O itself is hands down my favorite mech from its design, to its sound effects, to its arsenal.

>because the people making it expected a Season 3
nah, it was just a Twin Peaks situation. the network told them to solve the mystery, and they scrambled to wrap everything up.

I thought Roger Smith was the coolest dude on the planet when this came out.

The dub as a whole was superior to the original, which isn't something that happens often. Whoever did his English voice knocked it out of the park, especially with the crazy laughter.
I think a movie would work out much better. Since the series is already westaboo as fuck, to the point that most people might mistake it for a western cartoon, the transition to film would feel much smoother and more natural than the likes of Edge of Tomorrow.

I now want a Big O movie adaption with Jon Hamm playing Roger Smith.

You don't still? Even if he is a louse?

Jon Hamm seems to be doing enough weird shit with his career lately that he'd probably be up for it.

I think the whole piloting giant robots schtick and the good s1 animation would be a big giveaway that it's a Japanese cartoon.

Yeah I watched it highschool on Adult Swim and it always made me want to act like a classy dude all the time. Not in a cringey way though, just stoic and quiet and you know what?

Probably cringey. I used RogerSmith as my Xanga name and talked to girls from my Highschool who had no idea it was me.

Roger Smith is a protagonist in the old adventure serial tradition of just making the coolest motherfucker in the world.

>But isn't this show appealing more toward the western audiences? What they don't like it? What can we do to bring in the Otaku audience?
>He uses a mech
>Done. Get the team ready

>tfw not a smooth playboy millionaire who pilots a bad ass Mech

Yeah I'm thinking it could definitely work. I mean Pacific Rim takes some heavy design influences from it (I remember an interview somewhere where they said it was one of the things the artists took inspiration from).

I'm thinking Josh Brolin for Alex Rosewater. He'd nail that shit, it's similar to his character in Wallstreet 2.

Damn Cred Forums... I wish I was a rich producer. I'd jump on this so hard.

>But isn't this show appealing more toward the western audiences? What they don't like it? What can we do to bring in the Otaku audience?
>His sidekick is Rei
>Done. Get the team ready

Fixed that for you

The Max Gokin Big O is one of my Prized possessions. I've wanted a huge Big O since I was younger. It's as cool as I expected.

SPOILER NEXT TIME

I agree wholeheartedly. Everything about Schwarz is great. And regarding the VAs, I'm really fucking surprised with the english dub in general. It's literally flawless. Well, almost, because I didn't really like the voice of Vera Ronstadt; but more in terms of sound, rather than the actual voice-acting.

By the way, there's a pretty interesting interview with Lia Sargent (Dorothy's voice-actress) in which she talks about how much work she put into Dorothy and how she changed up a few lines for better effect.

Linked timemark is where they start talking about Big O, but the whole interview is worth watching really. Really fun and exciting to listen to.

It's definitely worth watching, and even for anyone who isn't into Mecha at all. You really don't need to like the genre for this to maybe become one of your most liked shows of all time. That was the case for me at least.
The vast majority of characters is great and interesting; the main-story is pretty alright too, although I've gotta admit that I liked the filler-episodes with their own little stories WAAAY, WAY more. Like already said, don't expect too much from season 2. I think it's still great, but no comparison to season 1. The art-style also slightly changes, and in my opinion: for the worse.
The soundtrack is fucking godly from beginning to end, there's nothing more I can add to that.

I'd recommend you to wait for the next weekend and watch it from beginning to finish on a quiet, comfy saturday night with lots of snacks and a few cold ones nearby. You won't regret it, believe me.

Confirmed for excellent taste and brother from another mother.
