Just saw Kubo yesterday

just saw Kubo yesterday
and I gotta say it was better than i expected

so Kubo thread

There was 2 people in my cinema.

more like kuso lel

when I went
there was 8 people total

I'd like to get one of the film posters, leaning toward this one.

>Ice Age: Collision Course (5th film, July 22)
>Budget: 105 Million
>Box Office: 397.9 Million

>Sausage Party (August 12)
>Budget: 19 Million
>Box Office: 114.9 Million

>Kubo and the Two Strings (August 19)
>Budget: 60 Million
>Box Office: 50.7 Million

I liked it a lot, had that old school fairytale vibe like Coraline. Kubo is probably now my favorite Laika film. Coraline was a good mix of creepy and bizarre. Loved it. Box Trolls was fun but meandered a bit and pushed the gross dirty british angle too much. Loved the henchmen and the machinery porn though. Paranorman didn't really feel like it needed to be animated at all to me. It was like Hocus Pocus but with a sympathetic witch. Probably why I disliked it. It was the least fantastical of all of them. It always strikes me as odd how other people often rate it as their favorite. His sister had a great ass though.

Mine had like 20 and it was a late night screening.

>only international screenings may save Kubo now

it doesn't really matter cause Laika will always be in business as long as Nike stays in business

Pretty much this.
Laika isn't in it for the profit and they already know each of their movies will make low returns.

I loved the first 25 minutes, but it quickly lost direction. It's a shame that the writers couldn't pull their weight and ruined such a beautiful stop motion production.

i just saw it last night, wish i had a chance to see it sooner.

I saw it the other day and I'm thinking of seeing again because of how beautiful it is on a big screen. Is it any good in 3D?

I just thought the snow and whale scenes were a bit slow. Or pretty much every scene with just Kubo and Monkey. I'd probably enjoy those parts more though during a rewatch.

I enjoyed everything else.

Bad advertising.

The trailers for this movie were garbage (at least in the US), and they rarely aired.

I don't understand this world anymore. Maybe I never did.

Love the film
best fight would be monkey and one of the sister on the boat

and the film really made me hungry for sushi when they caught that salmon and ate it raw

That fight was my favorite as well.

Wish we had actually gotten to see the aunt's face though.

hoenstly after that fight
watching the fight with the moon king seemed underwhelming

I loved it simply because of it's set-up.

Kubo just thinking "fuck this shitty ass armor" and then using the bracelets as strings got me rock hard still

I think they should have gone full Shadow of the Colossus with the Moon King. I liked the twist with the two strings though.

Definitely gonna watch it at some point

Moral Orel made me love stopmotion

I was there by myself when I went last week. They were originally playing the wrong movie too.

>Implying any asian countries will see it
They all fucking hate each other.

I just wish the actual armor pieces mattered more, and I wish Kubo actually used his origami abilities to solve more problems. Especially in the final confrontation.

what did they play instead?

> rarely aired

they were on every commercical break during the Olympics.

Kubo ran like most asain fantasy movie I've watched excluding changes that made it more kid friendly.I was actually pleasantly surprised when the movie was over. Though the troprs that were present were the ones i like the least.

War Dogs.

Someone on twitter mentioned a cut scene where the giant skeleton was originally dragging the whale carcass or something, wonder how that would have changed the story.

Meh, could've been worse

Around 20-25 people in mine, however it was a small room, 8:30 pm and most of them were neckbeards/old women

I went yesterday for an early screening
when I got to the theater it was packed full of kids
since Kubo was the only kids film playing thought they were all there to see it
but I found out they were just there for an advanced screening of Storks

Wound up watching Kubo with two other family
a family of four and a grandmother and her granddaughter

what will you do when they close their doors? It's not like Nike gives him money to waste. He also has to pay his employees.

It was a fucking great film, best of the year and one of my personal favorites of all time

well technically Nike kinda does, since the chairman of Laika is the co-founder of Nike
and its CEO is on its Board of Directors
and Nike gotta pay them somehow

but I get what you mean
yeah its fun to make passion project but still gotta pay people and whatnot

so I just assume they probably do have some money saved up for in case a movie doesn't make a return

>sausage party
>19million
sounds like bullcrap

even Delgo was like 30mil

its that low cause they didn't pay the majority of their animators
and when some animators left during mid productions due to the low pay
they just swooped up animation students who just recently graduated and were willing to work for just low pay to get their foot in the door

Is there anything salvageable about the Ice Ace sequels?

How did you expect it to be? I mean, it didn't look terrible by any means.

I didn't hype myself up for this film and I thought it was gonna be great
and it turned out to be even better

"I animated food items having an orgy"

I watched the recent one during my nephew's birthday. Buck is enjoyable. But the movie still gave me a headache.

They had a shitload of characters in the main cast. I didn't know it had gotten that large.

>Saw this today
>That Shinto aesthetic
>That chemistry
>That ambience
>And then there are two five year olds running up and down the cinema because they can't actually appreciate it

Favourite film of the year so far desu

Nearly cried in the beginning when the mom was struggling to crawl on the beach to baby Kubo

Kubo silently taking care of his mother while she was catatonic was probably my favorite part of the movie.

the movie started off so fucking dark..I love it

Hold on. Kubo was already released? Shit man, they don't show it at the Drive in I got too.

>drive in
>kermit
time traveler detected

I heard gasps at my showing when her head hit the rocks. Kubo went the extra mile.

It didn't go to my usual place either.
Was super bummed out.
I basically felt like cheating on my usual theater going to some AMC for it.
And then I paid $8 for a medium popcorn and was like "I'm glad I'm sneaking in a dollar store bottle of water instead of paying $3.50 on top of this bullcrap"

Was there an audible cracking noise at that part or did I just think it?

Also shitloads of nightmare fuel in this flick. What is it with stop-motion films and nightmare fuel?

there was that noise

I think it was just a *thump* or whatever the sound is when you hit your head on something hard underwater.

The only genuinely spooky part was the Sisters first appearance. That was so good.

It could've been more creepier in my opinion

I could have, but it shouldn't have.
I don't know if it's because of my age or my profession, but in the back of my mind I'm always thinking whether something is a bit too much for kids, and honestly, that scene was pretty close.

I really liked it, [spoilers]though I think the Moon King got off way too easy. Sure he's mortal now and doesn't remember anything but I still feel he deserved a worse fate for all the horrible things he did.[/spoilers]

I really hope the next Laika project brings back a bit of the horror atmosphere.

Yeah I was kind of blown away by it. It was extremely good, far better than I was expecting.

I saw this the other day with a friend, legit made me sad to see that there was only 4 people other than us two in the showing.

honestly so far this has to go down as one of my favorite movies of the year.

watching any scene you can see the love and effort they put into this. as a fan of the art of animation i can give these guys no higher praise than for me it rivaled the best of Studio Ghibli in terms of the sense of awe of what i was seeing on screen.

if you have any love for animation as an art go and see this take a friend, you wont be sorry. push it to your friends.

Bloodborne Aunts for best chars

bump

Would love to seema film about robots from them

I-I wish Kubo was my girlfriend

Where I am from, Kubo only aired for a week, I nearly missed it.
And sausage party is still in theater. There is no justice in this world.

There is an issue with that

I always get emotional when I see behind the scenes

My nephew was hiding behind his coat, so it was creepy enough for kids.

>And then there are two five year olds running up and down the cinema because they can't actually appreciate it
I had one five year old do this and an other's kid with an attention span so short he had to give him a cellphone to watch Barney videos...with audio. Fortunantely it didn't last long.

I love all of Laika's other films (Coraline in particular is one of my favorite movies of all-time), but I didn't like this one. The story felt really rushed to me, with very little character development or world building. I couldn't bring myself to care about what was happening.

Nobody watches the olympics anymore... they just tune in on youtube for the highlights later.

I was hyped by this board and it didnt meet those expectations. Solid movie with downright bad writing at times with super mediocre VActing.

Alright Cred Forums. Be honest.
I'm from a third world country and this movie is only on the most expensive theater. Should I go and watch it? Because if this movie it's so good, and I want to believe you, then I will go. I really want to support Laika.

pleb

you're already in a 3rd world country
you might as well treat yourself to get away from the hellhole that is your country
even if its for a few hours

Honestly they can write it off as supporting the arts or something else like that. There are alot of loopholes they can use to just keep them supported

So yes.
I''l go tuesday.

What country are you from?

>local theater plays it on their smallest screen
>their smallest screen has the worst sound and picture quality
Still a good film, but I'll watch it again when it gets release on 4k blueray to truly appreciate it

Peru.
The movie it's literally in just one theater.
