So what's the deal with this show? All the character seemed to be named after a gen or mineral. Are their powers based on the gemstone or something, because I can tell that turquoise one is Malachite wihout even looking it up

They're rock aliens.
Basically their gems are their only true physical selves and their bodies are more physical hard light projections.

They don't. Garnet says their bodies can turn into light, but she never says "Hard light construct" or anything similar. A lot of things in the show blur the line between science fiction and magic.

amethyst vs. steven and swi were the only good ones, because the episodes were actually about the fight. The fights weren't shoehorned in for a stupid melodramatic tumblrina moral.

I don't dispute what Pearl said, but calling their bodies "hard light" seems to be linking them to a sci-fi concept never explicitly mentioned in the show. For one thing, gems normally "poof" with some kind of dust when they are destabilized, which seems to indicate that while their bodies are created from light at formation (probably what Pearl meant by "conscious manifestation"), and can be turned into light at will for fusion or shape-shifting, their physical form is comprised of some kind of matter in it's stable state that disperses if they lose control of it.

The only good fight in this show was Pearl vs Amethyst. There was actually a good amount of thought and effort put into it and not just a bunch of references.

The rest were lazy and uninspired.

I've noticed that all of the good fights are in episodes animated by SMIP (the same studio that does the various ben 10s, generator rex, and nuPPG), and while that can be attributed to most of the episodes they do are written/boarded by either Joe/Colin and Jeff (especially when joe and jeff usually have a ton of frames in their storyboard during action sequences) or Hilary and Zuke, you've got a contrast in quality between the Stevonnie vs Jasper fight in Crack the Whip (boarded by raven and paul, animated at Rough Draft Korea), and the Smoky Quartz vs Jasper fight (also boarded by Raven and Paul, animated at SMIP)
