Actually the Terrigen might be able to kill Darwin. Apparently it can take away powers instead of instantly killing them like it did to Sunspot. So Darwin gets infected, loses his powers, and dies a slow painful death that his body can no longer adapt to

Let's make that anger you feel towards them a central part of the story."

Like, let's say Dani Moonstar touched some terrigen gas, would she die instantly like most, would it have no effect at all, or would it form double negative and give her powers back? Back during Son of M the Terrigen Mist was able to temporarily give depowered mutants their powers back, but at uncontrollable levels that hurt them and those around them.

It's more confusing for me given I only follow X-Men and no idea how Marvel treats their universe compared to DC.

In that issue the girls were all in that diner eating after a shopping day when they heard police sirens, the police were responding to the mists, after the fact. The cloud never came down on their head, they only showed up for the aftermath.
After Cyclop's school closed, Goldballs had a brief 15 minutes of new-superhero fame until he got outed as a mutant. He's still (in-universe) famous as a mutant superhero, that has propaganda value that Cyke will exploit, no matter how suck Goldballs is.
The last issues of the Cyclops Uncanny book had him leading a million-mutant-freedom-march on D.C., that's downright redeeming.
