It's really hard to get a read on why because if you believe every writer who is asked about it apparently EVERYONE there loves Misty and Danny. Of course if that were the case then why are we here? Is it some sort of long game? So many questions, so many contradictions.

They'll pair Danny and Misty in DEFENDERS, then do a subplot where Danny will learn that Luke and Misty had a thing once and feel insecure about his new girlfriend and friend's closeness, while Misty herself will feel conflicted about her mixed feelings regarding her current beau Danny and her ex-fuck buddy Luke. So Danny and Misty will fight and break up for a bit, which will make Misty seek out Luke for a feel good sex for the old times, but Luke will turn her down because he's getting serious with Jessica and doesn't want to fool around anymore. This will make Misty feeling rejected and shitty, which will prompt her again to seek out Danny and resolve their fight. Then Danny and Misty will get back together after apologizing one another.
This is 101 TV relationship drama.

Kind of the opposite (forcing a ship no one likes rather than denying one everyone likes), but it's comparable DC with SMWW. Literally no creator shipped it (to the point where Superman and WW writers had them flirting with other characters in their ongoings and ignoring it outside of the SMWW book) but somehow it still happened.

Yes. That's sometimes part of the drama. The nice boyfriend finds out, gets pissed of, "act like a jerk" and by doing so end up pushing the MC towards her ex. But himself is miserable or he start dating someone else close to both him and the MC, which leaves the MC jealous. That's when the cool ex gets cucked by the MC, because she tries to go back with the nice boyfriend. Now it is the ex time feel miserable and try to win her back.
It goes on like this for as much the show can keep it up. Sometimes the MC ends up with the ex and while nice guy with whatever other character, sometimes the MC ends up with the nice guy and ex fucks off or ends up with whatever other character. Sometimes they redo the whole dance after awhile when all the character have settled to shake things up again.
This page is everything wrong with fandom being pointed out. Even in fictional universe two dudes cant be friends without a creep writing fanfiction about them fucking each other.
