not really outside of him being some sort of hivemind that can possess bodies through unclear ways, it probably was gonna get expanded on before nick got tired of doing 70 seas

I don't even know what 70 Seas is about but those first few pages weren't exactly shining to me.

its pirate adventures involving a weeb, a pirate and a prophet that eventually gets an over-arcing story revolving around the weeb primarily, the first couple chapters are a bit rocky since the writer was still feeling out how to do the comic but the third and on get more cohesive, and a big pull to it (for me at least) is how he builds the setting for the comic, you get all these comments and references to things throughout chapters and at the end there's usually 1-2 infographic pages describing the continents/cultures described in the chapter
this is the only example I have saved offhand but each chapter usually has something like this and I really enjoy that

Not as far as I know. But I think it was that the guy requested only a single strip of what Crystal was doing now but Nick set it up so it could have a follow up. But that is just me guessing.

It was actually explained in the comment section of the last page of 70-Seas together with the true nature of the Kings boss since it was not going to be explained otherwise.

It's a hivemind fungus(like the crows in Cluck Cluck crisis) that communicates through pheromones. Normally when a yumans gets infected they become like mindless zombies due to the thoughts of all of them jumbling together. But when the original Grin got infected he kept his mind due to his will and thirst for revenge. He later found out that he could gain control of the hivemind by handpicking individuals with similar goals and personalities and then indoctrinate them(plus ninja training) before infecting them with the fungus. One planned arc was NIkol ending up in a "school" where Grins new disciples(I.E. pawns) were being trained.

You remember the Cartographers Guild? While they started just as an organisation of mapmakers they later took on many other additional duties, the most important being managing the mail of the entire world(Debbie works for them). One of their many faceless employes found out that many powerful people and even nations sends sensitive and secret information in the mail(coups, planned wars, general stupidity of rulers etc.). And seeing as they trust the Guild completly he decided to use that to make the world a better place. He alters/diverts letters and messages to keep conflicts from happening and generally to kick powerful jerks down a peg.
But sometimes that is not enough. Enter the Kings.
He pays them and funds their operations by diverting small amounts of money from multiple millionaires that would never notice and by blackmailing the right people..

Agreed, but Nick felt he hadn't set enough groundwork to explain it all properly in comic.

There is a lot I wish could have been expanded on about the world the comic is set in. But I ain't complaining about what we get cause it's entertaining.

yeah I can see that with where it ended, and it was cool leaving grin and the kings unexplained within the comic where it ended

but I'm not complaining knowing the answers to those questions now cause they're pretty neat

This is one of the reasons that make me miss 70 seas so much. The whole setting/universe is goddamn GREAT.

So much mystery to unveil, plus other unexplored crazy stuff (like nikol's past and the mess thats going on her homeland). I'm ok with the way the comic ended though.

The Kings' and grin will probably be left unknown, i mean, Nick himself said that Grin might show up on LK, but not really as a antagonist/villain, since he doesn't fit LK's vibe all that much.

While i think I like the stories in Latchkey Kingdom better I miss the worldbuilding and many of the fun characters from 70-Seas.
