I'm a senior at NJIT and my time here has really redpilled me about Indians in general. Oh fuck off you're from Sussex? Me too. My advice from one CS major to another, classes like CS288, 280, and 241 are designed to break your balls. 288 in particular. Andrew Sohn teaches that class, though I hear after I passed it they brought in someone else to teach another section cause people complained about there being so few sections for such an important course. Sohn is a massive headache because he gives you open ended programming questions on exams, but he expects you to do things EXACTLY the way he wants you to or you get little to no credit.

It's possible to do well in that class, but you gotta put in the work. You'll probably need to spend around 5-10 hours a week doing his (admittedly optional) homework. It sucks but it's a class that's designed to weed out all the morons. Oh, and one more tip, while Sohn says that you'll need a bare-metal installation of a Linux distro, feel free to use virtual machines, it makes no difference.

good advice, thanks. my main issues for now is how awful i am at calc. calc 1 at sccc didnt require memorization of derivatives or integrals, and we could use a calculator. cant do that here. i also never took trig or pre-calc, just tested right into calc 1. so calc 2 has been killing me so far. i've been just doing integrals all day for a week. hours every day. i dont think 5-10 of something i'd likely enjoy (i had always done programming as a kid just for fun) will be an issue.

at least i'll be out of calc by the time im taking 288, 280, and 241.

Bergen county/majority of the state you have all the inconveniences of living in the country and non of the benifits and fun of the big cities.

The only places I would move would be the shore and Hunterdon county which is a really quiet and charming rural area on the deleware.

NJIT Calculus is legit one of the hardest calculus courses in the country. I've compared NJIT and MIT practice exams, NJIT is tougher. The calculus bit is easy, but later in the game the algebra will ruin you. The upside is that there's a pattern to the questions and their solutions, and if you do enough practice work you'll start to see that pattern.

Also, if you wanna make friends, join clubs. Some are terrible and cringy (See: Anime Club, Game Club) but there are plenty of professional societies with upstanding individuals in them. Plus you get to network. Check out the Association of Computing Machines and the IEEE. You'll want to make friends in your major and grade, because upper level CS courses are dominated by group projects. God I remember getting stuck in a course with two know-nothing Indians and having to do all the work. Thankfully it was all SQL so it wasn't that bad, but still.
