I came from a vaguely christian household and thought it would be similar, and I was wrong. The Rabbi was wearing a cool arm strap, and taught some cool philosophy about how anything can be used for good or bad, and then said it was up to us to decide.

Then we literally talked in a group for half an hour on how to make good life decisions and live a productive, happy life.

I remember that the topic of the afterlife came up and he basically said that it didn't matter, and that if you lead a good life without it, whether or not it existed was irrelevant because you did the best with what you had.

The Jews have their flaws and stereotypes or whatever but other than their super-elite, their values are pretty based and their culture pretty effective.
