I own a 30-30 for hunting and a .22 rugger for fun. Considering a .380 Smith and Wesson for a CC, I really like it over the Glock .380 as I prefer having an actual safety but I'm still looking at my options. Anyone have experience with both the S&W and the Glock, which do you recommend and why?

They are completely utilitarian and supremely reliable. I've shot over 100 different handguns. I keep coming back to the Glock as the best basic design for the average shooter. FWIW I have over 20,000 rounds through my 17.

How is the accuracy on the .380? From what shooting I've done the S&W was very accurate, I hear the Glock is less accurate but makes up for it with the recoil.

I agree except take out the average shooter part. Id say its inclusive for all levels. The beginner can get a no frills gun to learn trigger press and fundamentals of marksmanship. The advanced shooter enjoys the no bullshit goes bang every time accuracy and dependability.

That I can't help you with. We can't get short barreled guns over here these days. I have shot the 17, 17L, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 26, 27, 31, 34, 35. All ran OK.
An important point for a CCW - Glocks required the lease oil of any handgun I have shot. Helps keep clothing from staining.

I used to shoot IPSC and Metallic Silhouette. There are better guns for those games. That said, I did qualify for the national team shooting the G17.

Good point, I think I'm going to have to test shoot both guns some more and get a good feel for each as this is a big decision for me and I don't want to make a purchase if I'm not 100% sure.
My money is tied up in getting a Graphic Design degree right now, a gun is a big purchase for me and I'm more concerned with getting a CC at the moment.

I had not shot the 30 before buying. I had an assload of .45acp at the house so i stuck with that. Wanted compact for ccw.

I was concerned about the .45 in such a small package being comfy to shoot for fun especially the wife being afraid of it if it was too much. The heavier slide and the dual guide rod really make the recoil a little push straight back. Its easy to stay on target with followup shots and the natural point of aim in my hands is perfect every time. 10 round mags in such a compact package is great

They come with anti-sieze lube on the rails. Shooting a few boxes of quality ammo to run them in is a good idea. Usually takes far less rounds than a 1911.
Also Glocks generally don't like range reloads. Factory is best, if reloads then jacketed or plated, but not lead bullets.

I really like S&W. I've shot the Models 10, 15, 18, 19, 25, 28, 29, 36, 37, 60, 63, 66, 625, 686, 586, 629, 41, 659, 422, 2206. They make adequate semi autos and very accurate revolvers. Ruger are more durable, but heavier with rougher triggers.

The T97 on the other hand is shit, second rifle I bought before I knew any better.

For what it's worth, it's relatively easy to fix a Ruger. I took down a family member's SP101 and did a spring swap, polished & shimmed the trigger mechanism in a few hours one afternoon. It's like a different gun now. No idea why they're such shit from the factory.

It's fun hitting targets. Not everyone finds it fun, and it depends on the kind of shooting you prefer. Some people like the close range, fast paced events with time limits, others prefer the slower, longer range matches, some people like shooting moving targets, etc. There's even events dedicated to shooting guns that would be considered obsolete, like cowboy action shooting events. It's the same as developing any other skill; it's fun and satisfying to look at the targets after going through a course, see that you hit where you were aiming for, and know that you've built up your ability with time and practice.

Beretta are lovely looking guns. They are difficult to shoot well with heavy triggers, long trigger pulls and service grade sights. They have big grips, not ideal if you don't have large paws. I have owned and sold 4.
