Homeless people are trash. They can't be helped. They will always find out ways to fuck something up one way or another. If you give them these "vacant homes" which aren't even vacant, they are owned by people. They will just trash it.

But I do agree that America could set aside land for them to build shantytowns and tent cities. During the Depression, people built Hoovervilles. But the Recession was in some ways worse for the homeless because they lived in cars and tents. They had to constantly be on the run from the police.

As America becomes more and more of a third world nation, we may have to accept that a lot of people will live third world lifestyles and live in shantytowns just like in the rest of the third world.

Many of those "vacant homes" are unfit for human habitation, damaged, etc. Some are private property, others in areas that even if you gave them the house for free, they'd be incapable of maintaining it and just end up trashing the place because no job, no utilities, etc. It's not as simple as "gibmedathouse".

And that's not even taking into account the people so mentally unstable that even given a home, they'd never actually be able to live in it.

Take a look at foreclosures sometime, those are usually a step above "abandoned" and they usually require a shitload of work to get them to a decent livable point. Usually the last occupant trashed or trashes the house/guts it before they finally get removed by the sheriff or leave.

And thats just foreclosures, abandoned homes usually need to be knocked down. like 90% of them in Detroit could never be made habitable simply due to mold and rot.

It would probably be more dangerous to the people receiving the abandoned homes than it would be for them to be homeless due to the hazards and illnesses(mold) that a derelict abandoned home can cause.

People with money clearly dont want the abandoned homes, so why should we give them to people who have ZERO means to fix them?
