A few years ago if you saw somebody being racist online, you would assume they were trolling using the most basic levels of trolling. Now with the surge of hyper anti-racism and the witch hunt to find racism in every single aspect of society, saying racist stuff has become more edgy than any point in history which has effectively increased the value of racism and racist memes and disrupted the meme economy. That's why this board is popular.

Pepe in it's current incarnation takes on so many forms that it's retarded not to think it wouldn't take on the memes of this board. Associating Pepe with white supremacy because of it's popularity is an attempt to do a couple of things.
1. Create a boogieman that has a very clear cut symbol to help legitimize the concept of the alt right as a cohesive group.
2. The meme will polarize people now that someone claims it was a racist meme. People who use Pepe could be called out for being racist thus pushing Pepe into the arms of people who aren't afraid of begin called racist.
3. Because they can. Smug Pepe probably pisses people off. I'm sure the person who wrote that for Hillary is someone who sits on Twitter and argues all day.
