As a public agency NASA releases so much data on all of their projects that any classified weirdness would turn up pretty much instantly. Sensitive, unreleased material pretty much all has to do with proprietary technology that a contractor doesn't want released, and most of that is pretty blase stuff.

No, this is correct and well known. NASA observatory platforms (both ground and space based) often get told they're not allowed to look in certain directions at certain times, lest they see military satellite.
They do this because they rightly don't trust NASA to handle top secret information. But by the same token if NASA faked a bunch of things the agency wouldn't be able to keep it a secret - you'd have hundreds of scientists and engineers around the world leaking it.

It's really not that complicated. you can make things look really flimsy as long as it's air-tight. In space, there's no atmosphere to gust up against your spacecraft, so you don't have to make it any thicker than a tin can with insulating foil on top.
