Nationalism mixed with socialism is a very stable and effective ideology in a chaotic globalized economy. It ensures stability and solidarity. The national dimension gives mutual trust, but also a sense of duty to the betterment of your country. A rich man, who invest all his money abroad. outsources labor or wants cheap foreign labor, is as much taboo as the poor man who contributes nothing.

Hitler and his thugs effectively ruined this ideology, however. They traded order with chaos. Peace with warmongering and genocide. We're only now recovering slightly from the stigma that comes with combining these two ideologies, but the stigma will probably never disappear completely.
