I cant remember all the details, but essentially the courts found that keeping any samples beyond 7 years was unreasonable. I think the police did try and make a case for digitised samples - but the costs alone are prohibitive and automated sequencing is ok for specific markers but not so for a complete sequence - you are looking at about $100$200 for a full sequence - and it will take special chips to do the job. It should be unlawful to keep innocent civilians from any databases. Its a remarkable area of law in the sense that the police themselves refuse to keep police officers dna, but insist as often as they can in obtaining and then keeping yours. I am not sure what current procedures are, but I do remember that in some cases samples were left to rot in staff fridges and in others retained indefinitely. It's a whole chain of custody and responsibility thing that I think is beyond 'easy-to-use' without special training. I suspect your sample is 'lost', but you may want to check it out - 7/7 was almost 10 years ago, there should be no reason for them to have it any longer. You might get compensation...
