West Virginia is genuinely a really cool state with a lot of nice people. My Dad's family was born there but I was born in Illinois, currently living in Florida. West Virginia is a great state, really really poor and the environment is thoroughly raped. The people tend to be great though and the women there are sexy as fuck. It's depressing, but mostly because of the history. The place is basically run like a resource extraction colony instead of a state, so none of the money made from exporting the natural resources stays here. The gov't has tried to revamp the economy with tourism and the chemical valley, but WV has a bad reputation thanks to the shitty documentaries and articles from back in the day where West Virginians gained their "inbred hillbilly" moniker. This combines with the fact that the lack of money and jobs means that businesses are taxed out the ass in order to pay for welfare programs to really depress the economy. The people are generally nice though, and there are barely any minorities outside of Charleston and Huntington.

Coal is dead there. Mines halved in a matter of years. Easier to surface mine low sulfulr coal out west...which is now getting but fucked as well.
