I live in Austin and I took this photo off of Red River and 7th. The homeless epidemic is huge. Right off of our busiest street, we've got a massive shelter that spreads drugs throughout the entire downtown. What's the solution to the homeless problem? It continues to go further and further north - is there any real way to solve it?

the homeless dont have money for drugs, first of all
second of all, there are two homeless shelters there. the ARCH, and the Salvation Army.
most of those bums are just an eyesore.
and yes, there is a way to solve it. get people in permanent housing and get them a job. there will always be mentally ill and drug addicts, but many of the homeless will rise above their situation with housing and help getting employed.

Opening the mental hospitals back up. Most homeless have severe mental problems. Back in the day these people had somewhere to go(the nuthouse), not wandering our cities and freezing to death in winter

That is a problem so big that everyone pretends it doesn't exist.
Most of them have mental issues and the rest are unsavable drug addicts.
It's really sad because there is absolutely no hope for those people.

There's several "safe" unlisted homes north, for example off of Burnet and Anderson that attracts a ton of soliciting and harassment. Seen several people threatened for not giving money and all kinds of crazy shit.
The solution isn't moving them further north. If it's giving them jobs, sure. But I think it's becoming a wider spread problem instead of just now being isolated to downtown. There's homeless in Pflugerville now too.

There's people that will stand on an intersection near me in round rock, they look real thuggish, like it's always young black and mexican guys that look like they came from prison, but they say they're from a church and they'll literally knock on your windows and ask for a donation.
