A hardcore of a Trump supporter I am, my vote would probably have to be for Ron Paul. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head that I don't like about him is the whole open borders shit.

I'm not sure how feasible a plan like that is, but the problem is that it's only a temporary solution. If you build a permanent barrier, it will be there forever until some kind of major disaster happens. If you use troops, you can be sure that they will use the bare minimum and we don't know how effective it will be. And the next President with different policies and ideology might eventually remove them. There is no such opportunity with a wall, it's future-proof for the coming decades/centuries.

Also Trump has criticized interventions in the Middle-East, has similar positions to Ron Paul vis-a-vis Russia and Crimea, talked about bringing troops home from NATO, said, and I quote: “If I become president, the era of nation building will be brought to a very swift and decisive end,”, has spoken out against globalism, etc. The problem is he often contradicts himself and we don't know how what is written in his speeches will be reflected in his policies.

Also, you need a much more rigorous plan to deport existing illegal aliens and change the legal immigration system. Even if Ron Paul was much better than open borders libertarians, he was still too soft on immigration, and since it was never his main platform, he never put the issue at the forefront and it never became part of the national discourse in such a way.

Voting Trump is pointless because voting is pointless.
I'll admit the motivation he's giving for anti-globalism is nice. But even if he's sincere(which I THINK he is), he's got so much stacked against him just in the US, it's not possible for him to do anything. They'll take him to a room in back and show him how vulnerable his wife and kids are and he'll play ball like everyone else. The man'll choose his family over the country, and you can't blame him. Blood is thickest.
And THEY know that. The system is completely wrecked and needs to be scrapped. Voting in a democracy failed us just as the founding men of this nation warned.

Which is why voting ISN'T pointless, unlike what you claim. Even if he can't do much by himself, him winning will legitimize some of his ideas and it will be seen as a valid way to win elections for future candidates, and not just in the United States. Overton Window and all that.

Hillary winning is legitimizing the establishment and the current system. Trump winning is legitimizing the anti-establishment movement against the current system.
