I don't want to go into too much detail but just a quick reality check from someone who actually works with software development/software design. Yes, something like this could be done by a single bored unemployed nerd. However the reality is most people capable of this don't want to do such boring work for free.

Secondly and more importantly, youtube employees aren't idiots. Their PR department might be full of english majors and liberal arts students but the guys working their back-end are google employees with google resources. A job at google is a coveted position and the guys are paid well so they want to keep working there. Fighting botting is about far more than just this one youtube heroes program, botting could clog down their entire site if they let it run free. Imagine every time there was a new movie or tv show episode or any current events thousands of clickbaity videos uploaded instantly. The server load alone would be massive because we're talking about HD video (and it'd have to be uploaded HD because youtube prioritizes HD in searches and at realistic lenghts) not to even mention the effect on usability.

So every time you think of some novel use for bots these guys have already thought of dozen ways to actually implement it and taken measures to prevent that. You're not the first person to think "hey let's use one of those bot things!"
