Not really. D-Fens frustration isn't unjustified, but as the cop points out at the end of the movie, everybody else has to deal with it too. But D-Fens is the only one who snaps and starts taking it out on his environment in violent and destructive acts - always worse than the violence done against him. Blowing up a bridge because you don't like traffic or bludgeoning a store owner because you think their prices are too high aren't appropriate reactions: D-Fens is by far the least considerate character in the movie. Ofcourse, he isn't a rational actor for most of the story after he starts losing it in the traffic jam. He's sympathetic in that we share his frustrations and his violent reaction to them is in part wish fullfillment, but ultimately he isn't 'right' about anything.

Recently watched it 4 weeks ago. The thrift store "Stomping Faggots" scene made me fall in love with this film.
The GTA progression of weapons is fucking genius starting out with a baseball bat and ending with a fucking rocket launcher.

Have you actually seen the movie? D-Fens is acting out to the most logical extreme when all other solutions have failed. All he wanted was change for the phone, the store owner practically said "fuck you" and then when the argument broke out he tried to brain D-Fens with a baseball bat, and even then he didn't hurt the store owner. The bridge was being torn apart by work crews trying to justify their city work budget so it wouldn't get cut the next year, so he gave them a real reason to fix it instead of just inconveniencing an entire city to line their pockets. There isn't a "right" or "wrong" side in this movie in regards to D-Fens versus the detective. The detective chose the path that has the least amount of bloodshed now, but allows everything that is wrong with society continue, D-Fens takes the route of standing against it because in his eyes it can't continue.

The thing about Falling Down is that it was intended by jewish faggot (((joel schumacher))) to be a lampooning of conservative white america. He so desperately wanted people to think that D-FENS was legitimately a bad guy.

Personally I have NEVER met a single (white) person who did not sympathize and identify with D-FENS.

The whole "reveal" toward the end that he was actually a crazy creepy psycho stalker the entire time was obviously just shoehorned in there to make people not like him, but it's such an obvious cover up. Douglas' character is not a regular guy who has had enough of "society". He's mentally unstable. His wife was able to prove that he was mentally unstable and was able to put a restraining order on him. You see throughout the film that he has severe anger issues that he is trying to repress. The film is about mental illness. You see how everyday occurrences (aside from the gangbangers and the gunshop owner) just build up on people, and you see how people finally reach that point where they go on a killing spree. It is not until someone confronts him and derails his logic that Douglas' character is finally able to see how sick he is, realizes what he was about to do to his family, and commits suicide by cop.

The whole movie is supposed to make you relate to Douglas' character, then help you understand that you need to curb that shit, because when you don't, you hurt those closest to you.

Nobody mentions the milsurp store owner because it was objectively the most boring and least organic scene in the movie. His wife got a restraining order? What the fuck does that prove? She couldn't even tell the cops an instance of him being violent, and if there was proof of him being violent it would have already been documented during the process of getting the restraining order. The only instance we see of him being "an abusive husband" is when he is watching a home movie of his daughters birthday where he just wanted 5 seconds of film with his daughter on a rocking horse and his wife was arguing with him.

Even at the end of the movie he was mocking the entire situation, referring to the cop as the "good sheriff" and him as the "villain" just like in the old western movies. He chose suicide by cop because he would rather his daughter get the insurance money for his death instead of watching her grow up from behind bars.

The reason it drew criticism, just like Fight Club, is that the film attempts to have it's cake and eat it too.

They throw in a few scenes and Duvall's rebuttal at the end to negate the actions of Douglas, just as the last 1/4 of Fight Club is taken up by Norton's character trying to disarm what he has started and get a qt gf.

With no alternatives, and facing the reality that he may not see his daughter again, he feels compelled to correct his worldview to soften the blow of the loss of his family.

Instead of actually garnering any respect or admiration for his attempts, he's chastised and lambasted multiple times as a psychopath, a white supremacist sympathizer, a "Thief" and a trespasser- a far cry from the free reign he remembered years before.

In the end, Foster isn't a bad guy, but even his perception as reasonable escalation of situations can be considered eccentric, at best.

Unfortunately, instead of being convinced by Prendergast that he needs help, he decides that he's unwilling to change for society, and chooses to commit suicide-by-cop.

It struck me when I first saw it as a glimpse into what can happen when a good man gets pushed beyond his limit. The main character has no ideology, has no friends, has no connections.

All he has is a work ethic and a "family man urge," both frustrated by the SJW-izing of society, symbolized by his loss of work as a defense contractor and his wife leaving him as he becomes more desperate.

At one point, a neo-Nazi tries to recruit him, and he refuses and ends up killing the neo-Nazi.

That part was not thrown in there to PC-ify the movie or make it easier for us to identifty with him. That bit was making an important point: neo-Nazis are loudmouthed fuckheads who can't help but attention whore, making them easy to watch and control, but people like the main character--competent, angry, educated, smart and adrift--are, in fact, MORE dangerous than neo-Nazis, because they are not looking for an ideology and are not "joiners." They are looking for a way to CONTRIBUTE to the society they worked to build and strengthen and defend.

When the rug of normalcy and decency is pulled far enough and fast enough out from under normal, hard-working people like Douglas' character, watch the fuck out...
