But by 1943, the Russians re-learned how to fight war and by 1944, the Red Army was a lean and mean force, capable of concentrating artillery and conducting maneuver warfare that would envelope entire German army groups and reduce them to reacting and anticipating moves.

The Soviets had regained initiative in 1942 and had the Germans routed from 1943 onward.

To sum it up by the film having the most brutal down to earth battle scene at the start, only to descend into largely schlocky Hollywood style violence makes the viewer horrified by war but then enjoy it at the end. It's not an Anti-War film or a "War is bad but necessary when justified" Ryan is a "America Fuck Yeah Go Sign Up and kill some baddies" movie.

No, I'm referring to the campaigns of 1939 and 1940, which saw the Nazis storm through Western Europe and the Balkans in a matter of weeks. This allowed them to polish new doctrines, using new weapons and developing leaders and combat experience. Not to mention a giant morale boost.

In comparison, the Red Army of 1941 had just come out political purge which saw most of its officer corps murdered, even though they had some impressive weapons at the time.

In 1941, the US Army was in pitiful shape as well, they were still rolling around in tankettes with bolt action rifles from the Great War.

Yeah getting into Russia, when Russia barely had an army to deal with the Germans. Once the fighting turned and both allied and eastern front militaries began warring against the Germans at the same time, they were against the same amount of Germans going into Germany. Some fucking strength.
The allied forces had some 5 million military personnel against 2 million Germans. (at 1944)
The Eastern front had some 6.5 million Russians against roughly 2 million Germans. (at 1945)

So let's go back to the beginning of the war
Allied forces western front: 2.8 million Allied against 3.3 million Germans (1941)
Eastern front: 2.6 Russian against roughly 3.7 million Germans

So throughout the war, it's been pretty 1 sided on the German side, but both Russian and allied eastern forces had pretty much the same number of military forces against the germans, till around 1943 when Russia amassed a bunch of unqualified people to start filling cannon fodder.

But Russians were pretty much losing the war until 1943 and would have lost the war had the U.S not entered. So no, Russia did not single handed win the war, but neither did we. I also do not know anybody who thinks we single handedly won the war, either.

It's true, though. Our movies always portray infantrymen as these hardasses shooting their way to victory, without artillery, tanks, or air power. Not the case. End the lies.

Go look at the German divisional spread for all years of the war on all fronts. Even in autumn 1944 after we invaded France, there were still twice as many divisions operating in the East--divisions who were more seasoned and well-trained in comparison to the western divisions that were largely made up of reserve troops.

You can divide the numbers into whatever amount of divisions you can think of, doesn't change the amount of men that served on either side of the war. I'm talking number of people, not divisions. Divisions didn't win the war, the numbers did. Both West and Eastern fronts had far greater number of people involved than Germany did at the turn of the war in 1944-1945 (and 43 for the Russians).

1) The numbers reflected are the number of men at the front at a given time. These do not take into account the total number involved when including dead and wounded who had been there from the time the fighting began and ceased.

2) You're comparing soldiers of completely different levels. Those serving in the East would equate to the premier sports team while those on the West were mainly bench-warmers and towel-boys.

3) Even if the numbers were accurate, the scale and sheer number of battles were completely incomparable. More Germans died at Stalingrad than on the entire Western Front. "Minor" battles such as Kharkov tied up more men than the "major" offensives in the west.

The whole war was orchestrated and the destruction of germany and death of all the good blood is sickening.

Shit turned around when the russians were able to amass up to 6.7 MILLION (almost 3 times more soldiers in just 2 years, compared to Germany's increase from 3.7 to 3.9 million in 1943. When Russia began pushing the German's back into Europe, Germany was left with 1.9 million in strength and Russia still had about 6.4 million strong in 1945.

Once again, those numbers do not accurately reflect the total scale. Regardless of how many men were at the front, there were far more in reserve in the east which is reflected by the division count difference. When one front has inflicted a 9:1 ratio of casualties compared to the other, it's only common sense that you'd keep a larger reserve there.

It implies a fixed size. In the German army of the time, this was normally between 15,000-20,000 men.

Well he was hospitalized when the government betrayed Mussolini and the whole Italian army just collapsed. I don't know how he got home from the hospital but at point the only troops fighting against the allies in the Italian front were just Germans.

Not only were the strenght numbers at any given time higher on the Eastern front, but you're completely forgetting the fact that these numbers are reflected ON TOP of the men who had been killed or wounded. Between 1941 and 1944, there were 5.8 MILLION German casualties on the Eastern front. Not included here are several million more who were taken prisoner. Every time these numbers grew, they had to be replaced by soldiers in reserve divisions to hold the frontline manpower numbers you're seeing on Wiki.

If we could simply tally up the total number of men who had fought on both fronts throughout the entire war, you'd see much higher numbers in the East simply due to the number of losses that had to be replaced all the time.

The US gave them 11 billion of 1940s dollars worth of aid throughout the war. Not sure how much went to Britain, but it took about 60 years to fully pay back.

The war could have probably been Germany's win if the US stayed neutral in Europe.
