Despite growing up in a semi-affluent neighbourhood, I had plenty of friends who were gutter trash like yourself, and I've had to indirectly deal with the police more than once. I never had a problem with them, because I was calm and rational when I talked to them, but my friends would act like loud, entitled assholes and get themselves in trouble.
The funny thing is the enormous amount of patience most cops have with suspects. They give them chance after chance to redeem themselves and calm down, but they never take it. They just escalate to the point where the cops have to cuff them of wrestle them to the ground. Most of these situations could have been resolved if they'd spent a minute talking to the cops in a rational manner, something I always was forced to do because I was hanging out with these assholes.

Because I got to see what thugs and other petty criminals are like when dealing with the law, I gained a whole new level of respect for the cops, and I understand perfectly well why they're cautious or apprehensive when talking to people.
