First off, FALs are in 7.62 NATO which is just as common as 5.56 NATO. Secondly there are AK's in 5.56 if you really want one but if you honestly think you're going to be picking up ammunition off dead bodies you're going to be in for a real surprise.

It's not really an ammunition recovery problem as it is a ammunition sharing problem. Everyone in an operational unit needs to use the same ammo, magazines, etc. if they're going to be effective, especially unconventional forces. ARs are the most common combat rifles in the US, so it would make sense for them to be the standard firearm.

While characteristically the round may be better at range etc, it is more expensive to stock pile and the benefits don't outweigh the weight to carry and relative scarcity compare to .223/5.56.

i would say a mix of both the SKS and the AK assuming the war lasted a long period of time and you want to arm as many people as possible. they are cheap to manufature, very reliable, durable, and since they use the same ammo it would be easy to manufacture and obtain large quantities of munitions. while some might ask why i would put the SKS along side the AK, its because the AK has a magazine. that might be wierd reason right? not really. magazines would need to be manufactured costing more to arm the combatants, and the SKS can be loaded either with a stripper clip or hand loaded when out clips which is useful in long drawn out fights, allowing poorly trained soldiers to function fairly well in a chaotic environement. but if you got a bunch lying around or just need to provide for your weapon alone i would vote for an AR

AR would be fine for urban warfare but for geurilla you want a FAL or AK. Something that is gonna be able to get beat to shit and crapped in and require no parts and very little cleaning.

the problem with the AR is it was designed to be used by a well equipped standing army with a good supply line and bases not a 15 man geurilla squadron with so few deliveries of supplies (usually only ammunition and maybe medical) that they have to hunt and gather their own food.
