Because a state owned company cannot go out of business. This means that company does not have the incentive to make better products relative to the competition. When the products eventually become worse than the external competition, the state will not allow external competitors on the market in that country. When this happens you have an unsatisfied and angry population. This type of population can only be controlled through dictatorship.

It's nice to have the state provide for the citizens but the only things that should be provided are emergency healthcare, police/law work, military to defend the national territory and a minimal food/money support for those that are too poor to afford anything.
