Convince me to be religious Cred Forums

I was raised without a religion and now am an atheist. All this "Cred Forums is a christian board" memeing has gotten me interested in religion and faith, but I still don't believe in god at all. I don't mean to tip my fedora too hard, but it just doesn't make sense to me. So convince me why I should find God and go to church and shit.

look at history and consider that it's the glue that direct humanity's creative energies and holds societies together

Former atheist here

I used to always think I was "too smart" for any belief, but here's the thing. Religion doesn't have to be totally true. Having a simple faith to root your morals and virtues in can be very helpful as a basic foundation in ones life. Living without religion, at least in my opinion, leads to feeling empty and like there's little to no purpose in life. That void can be filled with things like philosophy and culture, which is good, but having those two things plus a basic faith is even better. Having those three strong foundations in your life WILL make you the best man you can be.

The purpose of religion in a man's life isn't to use as a science textbook, or to help with some insecurity about where things come from, but is rather a tool you use to keep yourself and your morals grounded. It enhances your virtues and helps in having your purpose.

Right Wing politics are concerned with the long-term survival of Civilization

Christianity is only concerned with personal salvation to become part of a nebulous afterlife for which no evidence exists, and for which this world needs to be sacrificed, which is best expressed in the way early christians like Martin of Tours refused to fight enemies of their nations, insofar killing in this world could cost them heaven

When Jesus says "if they take your coat, let them have your shirt as well", "do not resist evil", "I have come to turn a man against his own household", "if you don't hate your self and your own family you can't follow me", "love your enemies, pray for your persecutors", "the meek will inherit the Earth", "those that wanna die will live", "blessed are those the persecuted, for they will be my Kingdom", "do not save treasures for tomorrow", "carry your cross so that you can receive eternal reward", "Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you'll have treasure in heaven", "it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than for the rich to enter Heaven", "Woe to you who are well fed, Woe to you who laugh, for you will mourn and weep"...

... he is not kidding, or meaning the opposite, but actually setting down a morality where the world is a lie and only the afterlife is the real deal, so destroying your life in this world, "carrying your cross" as he says, is completely logical

Cred Forums "christians" seem to believe Jesus actually meant the OPPOSITE of all that, and that Jesus wants you to defend your family, that Jesus wants you to kill your enemies, to become prosperous, well-fed and rich in this world, and to avoid persecution and death!

>Only a person that does not actually believe in the Heaven for the persecuted, the meek, and the martyred would actually re-interpret Christianity as a cult of earthly power which declares "the strong shall inherit the Earth", "my kingdom is of this world" and "you must destroy the enemies of your nation"

Only some one that just wanna use Christianity as an empty shell devoid of any true religious promises would claim that Paul and Peter misinterpreted Jesus when they submitted to their enemies and died to their enemies, instead of fighting the romans back and establishing a crusader kingdom, thing that one would expect them to do if Jesus meant "be a fighter and impose your will on your enemies" when he said "love your enemies and lend all they need to them without expecting anything in return"

But using Christianity as a shell devoid of any religious promises simply allows its poisonous morality to survive into the next generation.

You can tell your children that Jesus wanted them to be earthly warriors because "I didn't come to bring peace", but you can't stop them from reading the rest of the paragraph and realizing what Jesus wanted is for them to put christian morality above the good-being of their own families.

You can tell your children that Jesus wanted them to be earthly warriors because "Buy a sword", but you can't stop them from reading the next chapter and realizing that Jesus stopped Peter from using the sword, and reprimanded him for misunderstanding, all while asking him to carry his own cross (Peter, fully realizing that Jesus meant all the stuff about embracing death and his kingdom was not of this world, that angelic chariots were not going to slay his enemies and bring him victory, realized he was doomed, and would then deny Jesus 3 times)

Sooner or later, your "strict catholic crusader" state will be reformed into liberalism, because the Gospel will still exist, because your children, like Peter, will realize that Jesus meant it when he said "you are to be persecuted and martyred for me", that Jesus didn't say "you will live in a stable and powerful civilization, free of oppresion and death, thanks to me".

this. I'm glad someone else has had a similar transition

I grew up as a Methodist, and even though I am no longer religious, I would still take my children to church every week if I were to have a child. Religion was a big part of who I am today and it installed a range of values in me that I don't think I would have had otherwise.

Even if you don't believe in a region, religion can be very beneficial for learning values and morals especially for kids.

Should you become a Christian you should watch this video so you don't become the wrong kind.

What if I told you christianity doesn't need to be strict adherence to the bible and can simply be using it's general morals, ideas of community, treating others well, and sense of having a purpose to enhance one's life and their virtues.

When a society has prospered from the seeds of Christianity it makes sense to defend it against those who would see it removed with someone much worse. On the meta level, not community level, if something seeks to destroy all that which christianity has achieved, it must be defended in the name of your people and your God. Besides...

>"… For it [government] is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath upon the one who practices evil." (Romans 13:4)

Government has the right to protect it's people from evil. Besides you can caricature and strawman all christians as selfish hypocrites only concerned with the afterlife, but most of us simply believe that being a christian man will make you the best man you can be. This means giving back to the world around us.

Not to mention we can directly communicate to God if we are earnest.

Islam is the ultimate redpill. No Christians today actually follow what they believe anymore so they obviously don't believe it very much. Christians 100 years ago would be seen as enemies of Western civilization and proto-islamic if they time traveled to today and kept their faith.

Christianity is a empty husk of what it used to be. The ministers are all faggots and I used to go to church a lot, the ministers don't always believe in God and the people attending are often old people who are wheeled to church without any idea what is going on and pretty much nobody else.

Christianity is just a label people give themselves to be quirky and unusual or to show that they are very right wing. Last time I met a guy I thought was a honest Christian was in university around 2015, but before that was in 2004. The rest just do stuff out of 'tradition' or being homosexuals trying to make a point out of going to church. It is a dead religion and includes lots of contradictory beliefs just like atheism. For example Matthew 26:39, read it and remember that Christians believe Jesus is God, which makes several parts of the Bible contradictory including the example verse.

Islam on the other hand is without contradiction, it is logically sound and is the actual truth that God has given again and again and again.

Also atheists can not logically have any morality. The consequence of atheism is the belief that morality does not exist because there exists no logical reasons why any moral statements are true for atheists in general.

It just doesn't work in the long run to be fundamentally amoral.

Here is my suggestion to you, which I think is consistent with the mental premise that inspired this thread (assuming you're not trolling, and I don't sense that you are):

Ask the God who may or may not exist to reveal himself to you if he's out there.

Just a mental prayer - a thought. But make this prayer in a serious way. Consider kneeling, as a sign of good faith, although that is not a matter of necessity.

Consider making a conditional promise: e.g., if you reveal yourself to me, I promise to do my best to obey your will for me.

-- This method worked for me! But it was not an instant revelation. I went from agnostic to theist, gradually, like the emerging light of dawn over a 2-3 year period. Then slowly from theist to Christian.

There is a surprisingly strong historical case to be made for Jesus Christ. Of course, you can't "prove" either the existence of Jesus or his claim to divinity in a scientific sense, but when one applies the traditional standards of historical proof to the case for Christ, the evidence is surprisingly strong for both his existence and his resurrection: clear and convincing evidence, in my opinion (although, to be fair, not, I think, "proof beyond a reasonable doubt").

A good concise book that treats this subject is Michael Green, "Was Jesus Who He Said He Was?", which is available on Amazon. A quick read at about 115 pages.

A less well-written book, that unfortunately is written in a kind of golly-gee-whiz style, but that is despite its stylistic inadequacies chock full of an impressive body of facts, is: "More Than a Carpenter" by Josh McDowell.

Again, it's written in a very corny style, but the facts and arguments (e.g., the manuscript evidence) are very strong, in my opinion.

Do try prayer: a sincere experiment. You don't have to say a single word out loud, or tell anybody what you're doing. You can do it entirely in the privacy of your own room: your little secret, between you and the God who may or may not exist.

Science => The Best Religion
Everything is true until disproven using data that is also assumed to be true.

Not true. There are plenty of ethical theories that don't rely on believing in God.
Utilitarianism, certain versions of Kantianism.
People have been doing this shit without God for centuries mate.

and showing a demon possessed.

youtube.com/watch?v=0B5FwnMMcjE

Science is a tool to predict and make models of certain physical phenomena (those who can be measured) there are many things that science might never answer (like string theory)

Utilitarianism is directly based on Christian morality. There is no logical reason why altruism should be part of moral reasoning or that the purpose of morality should be to serve other people. The reason Bentham believed altruism had something to do with morality is due to Christianity. Atheists who claim to follow some moral discipline usually follow something based on Christianity. Morality before Christianity in pre-Christian Europe was completely different like the Greeks who would have seen charity as bad moral behaviour for example. The whole 'moral behaviour is about serving other people' is a Christian thing, you never saw that in pre-Christian Europe where good moral behaviour was everything that made you richer, more powerful, more beautiful, more feared, braver and so on and so forth. Which is why Nietzsche called Christian morality for slave morality (because it is all about serving others) while pre-Christian morality is master morality.

Atheists follow Christian morality, but have no reason to. There is no reason why an atheist should follow utilitarianism if he doesn't want to. A moral statement like 'killing innocent people is wrong' is only valid for atheists who don't want to kill innocent people, if they actually want to kill innocent people there are no logical reasons why utilitarianism should be followed. Moral statements therefore make no sense for atheists. 'stealing is morally wrong' only applies to those who don't want to steal, there are no logical reasons why it is morally wrong for those who want to steal, kill innocent people and so on.

Are you convinced now Op ?

>Science is
...a religion.

It's not, it's a method. That is like saying cooking food in a pot is a religion or using a match to light a fire is a religion. Science don't include any belief in anything. You can use science daily and still have contradictory beliefs to everyone who uses science.

>altruism

Science is a process.

Altruism is suicide, Utilitarianism is also suicide.

Atheism is really known as hedonism.

Scientism is a religion. That is to say, the deification of science.

a religion is...
>a method
>a process
and science is a better one, with more technology produced from it

>science needs a deity to become a religion

except you know Divine Inspiration.

What kind of world do you want to live in?

A hellscape plagued by literal demons and hostile aliens and mutants in a bladerunner lonely ass silicone hunting world?

Or a Glorious one WITH all the awesome science as well creating our own garden on eden on each world we terraform inspired by such Divine Pleadings.

To deny God is to deny creation.

>why do you think there are few inventors anymore just physicist researchers?

Keep going into science, You will find you discover God.

Just develop your moral compass, it will eventually align with Christianity and you can just follow your heart. One thing I like about being Catholic is that nudity is totally cool. Hello to nude Christian art. We are made in God's image so we should not be ashamed of our bodies. This means:
> Sharia is bad.
> Appreciation of other bodies is a-ok.
Porno is a sin but not a big one, and one nice thing about being a Christian is acknowledging that we are sinners, we just try to be less degenerate and so forth, but we stumble constantly. Just be up front about it and ask for forgiveness now and then. Hard core Christians will probably hate what I'm saying but like I said, I'm a sinner. They are too.

And I do mean literally the art of craft not the theory of the beginnings of the universe.

You guys are all retarded.

Scientism is just prescribes the definition of a word.

That is to say: Something is real if the assumption of its reality implies predictions which can be observed.

That's all it is. just a definition.

dubs of truth.

what happens if I assume you are a bot and not real?
>do you dissapear?

Here's one that made me hmmm

So Thomas was one of Jesus' disciples right. When Jesus died, the apostles were all together praying however, Thomas was the only apostle who was not with them. Jesus then appeared to the other 10 apostles and showed that he had risen from the dead. When the other apostles told Thomas,Thomas claimed they were crazy and said that until he could put his fingers in the holes where the nails went (in jesus hands and feet) he would not believe Jesus had risen. Jesus then revealed himself to Thomas and thomas touched the holes and believed that Jesus had risen. Now this could all be a made up story but Thomas himself travelled all the way from the middle east to India telling people about what had happened and he died in Chennai, India. Now if Thomas didn't really believe Jesus had risen would he have travelled so far and given his life for Jesus if he hadn't seen him risen?

>what happens if I assume you are a bot and not real?

If you say I'm a bot, then that implies that if you trace my IP to my home, and come in the house and check all the computers, that one of them would be running a bot.

Look up the Christian Dark Ages

The dark ages were caused by a power vacuum left by the fall of the Roman empire and the subsequent lack of any strong western civilization pushing progress forward. The fact that all there was left to unite people was Christianity is an irrelevancy.

>notice only every time a "renaissance" happens or progress occurs it's because of a powerful western society
>the role of Christianity is maintaining the moral and mental tenacity of these civilizations is undeniable

MUH CHRISTIAN DARK AGES. KEK GET DESTROYED FUNDIE

why don't you look it up in the wikipedia. There's been talk that during the Dark Ages past knowledge is actually preserved by the efforts of the medieval churches.
