Most economists say that import substitution is a flawed method of creating growth, but in our case it would be great. The currency is weak. we have abundant supplies of raw materials. and for some reason (probably massive fraud and monopolistic practices in retail), the price differential between goods sold in Canada and in the US never seems to equalize even when our dollar was at parity.

Trudeau Sr. had the usual Quebecois obsession with promulgating a more equitable system in attempt to reconcile Canada's Anglo-French duality, but he also imbibed the socialist literature which had circulated Quebec's academic circles in the late 40s onwards. He was a federalist and, honestly, I don't think he had any idea how bad or destructive multiculturalism would be for Canada. I'm not sure I'd go as far as to say that, if he could see the country today, he'd regret it, but I sincerely doubt it was his intention. I think his hope was that multiculturalism would bring Anglo-Canada and Quebec closer together more than anything else.

Essentially, Canada's destruction isn't the product of some nefarious plot, IMO, unlike, say, the US. Just short-sighted, imprudent government which toyed too much with dangerous ideas.

We are a country with not even 40 million people - we don't have the infastracture to support more than that either - our climate is fucking garbage - the only thing we have going for us is our oil & gas - we will never be able to make any amount of money outside of that (and clean water exports)

I'm for manufacturing too but it's not oil & gas that killed it - it was the high taxes the government imposes on manufacturing and corporations. Why would they manufacture here? What incentive is there? The tax rates are too high, the climate too shit and the pay off to low. All we have going for us manufacturing wise is basically our mills, which a lot of them are closing down or struggling to survive because of our oil & gas industry failing.

and eh yeah Oil was going to come down anyway, but if the government was willing to work with the oil & gas companies and offer lower tax rates and other incentives some of those jobs could have been saved - instead they did the exact opposite.

Just saying man - if you want more manufacturing jobs and more diversity in our economy here Trudeau is going to fuck that up too through even higher taxes, more carbon taxes and basically no incentives for any of those companies to produce and manufacture here.

America is a better place to manufacture, and even America is losing those jobs to Mexico now thanks to the leftist approach to high taxes.

When I was studying abroad in Italy a few years back, the class was filled with people from all over Europe: France, Germany, Greece, Sweden, Austria, Poland, Switzerland, etc. The professor asked us to come up with a piece of literature that represented our countries and its values. Everyone else had something that they could look to and put forth as an example of their country. It was really interesting to hear.

I, on the other hand, couldn't think of anything. I spoke with the other Canadian in the class during a break, and she said she had the same problem. She also mentioned how she couldn't come up with a coherent set of Canadian values like the Europeans were doing.

This was before things got really out of hand in terms of (some)Europeans hating their own culture and history so maybe things have changed, but it was fucking eye-opening for me at the time.
