I live in Georgia. No one is a real Southerner here, especially anywhere near Metro-Atlanta. Just a bunch of people who moved here in the 90's and 2000's.

I grew up in the south (Alabama specifically). I know Cred Forums jacks off to it because Cred Forums jacks off to anything that is seen as "conservative", but other than political leanings it is a pretty shitty area overall. Lots and lots and lots of minorities (although well segregated for the most part), very poor/hard to find jobs in most of the south (cities are an exception but if you're going to live in the south, rural >>>>>>> urban), and miserable weather. I moved to Colorado and never looked back, it's so much better here other than political leanings, but that's a small price to pay for a significantly higher quality of life.

I will say that there are two southern states that kick major ass, particularly the closer you get to the mountains: Tennessee and North Carolina. The other states have pockets of nice but otherwise are shitholes.

All this said, while I rate the south significantly lower than the mountain west and the Midwest, it is still way better than either coast. The coasts are fucking terrible, Middle America best America.

Angola is pretty interesting in that it has its own culture developed around the prison life there.

Lately they have been pushing education programs and vocational schools, and if the prisoner is well behaved enough they can get on "work release", where they can go work for a private business. It use to be common for the governor's cook to be a former prisoner from Angola because they had good culinary talent develop while they were the prison cooks.

Angola is really interesting from a reintegration standpoint, since they attempt to reintegrate the prisoners while they are still serving their sentence. Seems like it would lead to a lowering "return rate" of prisoners since you hold their hand in becoming a functional member of society.

Not to mention the prison radio station, arts and music done by prisoners, the prison golf course, and of course the Angola rodeo.

Ironic thing is is that Angola was a plantation prior to becoming a prison.

I'm from California but we have property in Tennessee. We work from home and go back and forth because we like the idea of rural living. We have traveled all over the state and have concluded the cities are all full of hipsters from the Midwest who have moved to Tennessee to live out some strange Portlandia daydream. The rural towns are usually very scenic and either majority Google or majority religious poor white folk. There is a strange classism there too that doesn't really exist in California. The rich folks and the poor folks seem to distrust each other and don't really intermingle. Alot of the younger poor folk who work in the restaurants and the retail stores seem really resentful of outsiders and people with money. Customer service is non existent. Also, Everybody wants to gossip about their neighbors.

Think of the old southern traditions mixed with some Victorian English stuff and take out the racism and you get the south now

Charleston is awesome, I'd recommend a visit there. Mount Pleasant is where its at if you're looking for the high class suburbs along with the West Ashley area. Downtown Charleston is full of bars due to the College of Charleston. A lot of degeneracy goes on there on a Saturday night, but overall its pretty white and an overall chill place to be in the fall and spring.

Southern identity as a way of behaving still exists. Hospitality, helpfulness, religiosity and respectful manners are commonplace. We still have our gun/hunting culture and military culture is still strong.

On the negative side, though, obesity and football are still things. Evangelicals still have a retarded way of viewing the world. Substance abuse is a huge problem.

5) There is still plenty of southern tradition alive and well, but it’s not really something you’ll experience more than superficially if you aren’t from here or don’t know anyone who’ll give you an in.
