I have the feeling many Dutch folks never think about SA and the history and prominence of our shared culture sadly.

I don't know, I only lived in SA until 3rd grade, but we genuinely never talked about the NL in or even thought about you guys other than mentioning one or two of the first explorers.
You have to realise, our "history" doesn't start with you or have anything to do with you. You are, for the most part, nothing to us. Europe isn't the "homeland". Our homeland is where we were born, South Africa. We are nothing like the Americans you see how desperately in search of an identity look back to their European ancestors culture.

Our history starts with the Voortrekkers, we generally don't care about where they came from before. All that matters is that they made the trek and started our Nations.

I'd say most Afrikaners see the Dutch as our long lost relatives. Except for the language, there isn't really much of a shared culture. Well, it is complicated. I don't see myself as Dutch. However, I recognize that we do have a shared heritage. Existing in isolation from the 'stamland' for more than 350 years will certainly lead to a slightly different culture. I guess similar to how Americans don't see themselves as British but recognize the family bond.
