Sure Trump lost he was a mess but it also was only the first debate and he was in hostile ground from the start the moderator clearly favored Hillary over him and needlessly attacked while letting Hillary just sit there and giving her no tough questions. He did okay in what clearly was not a fair fight.

I think that Trump started off strong, but let himself be baited by Clinton's personal attacks.
Nevertheless, Clinton didn't really talk much in terms of policy. All she did was talk about Trump, which didn't help her.
Post-debate polls aren't really in Clinton's favor. CNN's poll of ~530 people said Clinton won, but the online TIME and CNBC polls showed favor for Trump. Even after TIME scrubbed their poll to 50-50, it still went towards Trump.
Another poll said 95% of respondents didn't change their vote after the debate, meaning the vast majority of Trump supporters still support Trump, and the vast majority of Clinton supporters still support Clinton.
Where Clinton definitely lost was with the "Undecided" category. Polls showed more undecided voters tipping towards Trump than towards Clinton - although it was only in the 2-3% percent range, that's still enough to tip the balance in Trump's favor.
Although I agree that Trump clearly didn't prepare for this debate and did the same shit he does at rallies, the metrics aren't really supporting the mainstream narrative that Clinton won a decisive victory.
So, it was really just a lukewarm debate that Clinton's journalists are declaring a victory. It doesn't persuade Trump voters who walked away thinking he did better, and most Undecided voters have gone on record saying they didn't like how Clinton said nothing about helping the working class.
All Clinton said was taxing the wealthy, but that claim means nothing since everyone knows that the Clintons are filthy rich. Clinton did not lay any plans out about how she'd help the middle class.
Trump's vague promises to "bringing American jobs back" and "end bad free trade deals" at least gave undecided voters something to sink their teeth into.
Every president promises to tax the rich and give to the poor.

I'm a little baffled how anyone could think Clinton won that debate. Unless its from lowered expectations of "if she doesn't go onstage and drop multiple shartbombs then its a win" I just don't see how a working brain could reach that conclusion.

Trump clearly won the first few rounds and the rest while Clinton lost them. But she started off at a medium level and never improved, while Trump improved over time and was clearly getting under clinton's skin as her performance diminished. Its a clear 10-0 decision.

The very reason we're hearing all this post-debate discussion of biased moderators and microphones not working is spin for the Clinton loss.

Now, a debate performance is in the eye of the beholder, supporters or either candidate are going to come away from it thinking their side won. But objectively one side does better than the other and in this first debate Trump pulled off a win of moderate proportions.
